FGF23 as a calciotropic hormone [PDF]

open access: yesF1000Research, 2015
Maintaining mineral metabolism requires several organs and hormones. Fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) is a phosphatonin produced by bone cells that reduces renal production of calcitriol – 1,25(OH)2D3 – and induces phosphaturia. The consequences of a reduction in 1,25(OH)2D3 involve changes in calcium homeostasis.

Mouse liver injury induces hepatic macrophage FGF23 production

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2022
Fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) is a bone marrow cell produced hormone that functions in the intestine and kidney to regulate phosphate homeostasis.

High pretransplant FGF23 level is associated with persistent vitamin D insufficiency and poor graft survival in kidney transplant patients

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2023
Vitamin D3 (25[OH]D3) insufficiency and fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) elevation are usually attenuated after kidney transplantation (KT). However, elevated FGF23 may be associated with poor graft outcomes and vitamin D insufficiency after KT.

FGF23 promotes prostate cancer progression

open access: yesOncotarget, 2015
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in US men and the second leading cause of cancer deaths. Fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) is an endocrine FGF, normally expressed by osteocytes, which plays a critical role in phosphate homeostasis via a feedback loop involving the kidney and vitamin D.

FGF23 and Phosphate Wasting Disorders [PDF]

open access: yesBone Research, 2013
A decade ago, only two hormones, parathyroid hormone and 1,25(OH)2D, were widely recognized to directly affect phosphate homeostasis. Since the discovery of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) in 2000 (1), our understanding of the mechanisms of phosphate homeostasis and of bone mineralization has grown exponentially. FGF23 is the link between intestine,

PKC regulates the production of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23).

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2019
Serine/threonine protein kinase C (PKC) is activated by diacylglycerol that is released from membrane lipids by phospholipase C in response to activation of G protein-coupled receptors or receptor tyrosine kinases.

The role of FGF23/Klotho in mineral metabolism and chronic kidney disease [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a global health burden of growing incidence and prevalence. As renal function declines disturbances in mineral metabolism, such as hyperphosphatemia and secondary hyperparathyroidism, inevitably develop. These metabolic

The role of fibroblast growth factors in cell and cancer metabolism

open access: yesFEBS Letters, Volume 600, Issue 2, Page 140-163, January 2026.
Fibroblast growth factor (FGF) signaling regulates crucial signaling cascades that promote cell proliferation, survival, and metabolism. Therefore, FGFs and their receptors are often dysregulated in human diseases, including cancer, to sustain proliferation and rewire metabolism.

FGF23-Related Hypophosphataemic Bone Disease [PDF]

open access: yesAdvances in Therapy, 2020
Metabolic skeletal dysplasias comprise an extensive group of diseases capable of causing changes, usually progressive, in the bone and are due to hereditary disorders in many cases. The diagnosis and treatment of these diseases are not without difficulty, both because of their rarity and their possible confusion with more common diseases.

Systemic Control of Bone Homeostasis by FGF23 Signaling [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The regulation of phosphate metabolism as an influence on bone homeostasis is profound. Recent advances in understanding the systemic control of Fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF23) has uncovered novel effectors of endocrine feedback loops for calcium ...
