A multiscale approach to the migration of cancer stem cells: mathematical modelling and simulations [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2016
We propose a multiscale model of the invasion of the extracellular matrix by two types of cancer cells, the differentiated cancer cells and the cancer stem cells. We assume that the epithelial mesenchymal-like transition between them is driven primarily by the epidermal growth factors.

Instability of spiral and scroll waves in the presence of a gradient in the fibroblast density: the effects of fibroblast-myocyte coupling [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Fibroblast-myocyte coupling can modulate electrical-wave dynamics in cardiac tissue. In diseased hearts, the distribution of fibroblasts is heterogeneous, so there can be gradients in the fibroblast density (henceforth we call this GFD) especially from highly injured regions, like infarcted or ischemic zones, to less-wounded regions of the tissue ...

Fibroblast growth factor-23 mitigates hyperphosphatemia but accentuates calcitriol deficiency in chronic kidney disease.

open access: yesJournal of the American Society of Nephrology, 2005
Hyperphosphatemia, calcitriol deficiency, and secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) are common complications of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF-23) is a novel phosphaturic hormone that also inhibits renal 1alpha-hydroxylase ...

Iron Infusion and Induced Hypophosphatemia: The Role of Fibroblast Growth Factor‐23

open access: yesTherapeutic apheresis and dialysis, 2020
The mechanism of action of fibroblast growth factor‐23 (FGF23) is becoming increasingly clearer as a result of studies that have defined its structure and pleiotropic effects.

Dietary vitamin D3 deprivation suppresses fibroblast growth factor 23 signals by reducing serum phosphorus levels in laying hens

open access: yesAnimal Nutrition, 2022
The present study was carried out to evaluate the effect of dietary supplemental vitamin D3 on fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) signals as well as phosphorus homeostasis and metabolism in laying hens.

Genomics‐led approach to drug testing in models of undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
GA text Genomic data from undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma patients and preclinical models were used to inform a targeted drug screen. Selected compounds were tested in 2D and 3D cultures of UPS cell lines. A combination of trametinib and infigratinib was synergistic in the majority of UPS cell lines tested, which was further confirmed in an ex ...

Understanding and measuring mechanical signals in the tumor stroma

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This review discusses cancer‐associated fibroblast subtypes and their functions, particularly in relation to extracellular matrix production, as well as the development of 3D models to study tumor stroma mechanics in vitro. Several quantitative techniques to measure tissue mechanical properties are also described, to emphasize the diagnostic and ...

Dynamic Phase Transitions in Cell Spreading [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
We monitored isotropic spreading of mouse embryonic fibroblasts on fibronectin-coated substrates. Cell adhesion area versus time was measured via total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy. Spreading proceeds in well-defined phases. We found a power-law area growth with distinct exponents a_i in three sequential phases, which we denote basal ...

Fibroblast Growth Factor 23 in Long-Duration Spaceflight [PDF]

open access: yes
Many nutritional factors influence bone, from the basics of calcium and vitamin D, to factors which influence bone through acid/base balance, including protein, sodium, and more.

Phosphate-sensing mechanisms and functions of phosphate as a first messenger

open access: yesEndocrine Journal
Bone secrets the hormone, fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23), as an endocrine organ to regulate blood phosphate level. Phosphate is an essential mineral for the human body, and around 85% of phosphate is present in bone as a constituent of ...
