Difference in the regulation of IL-8 expression induced by uropathogenic E. coli between two kinds of urinary tract epithelial cells

open access: yesJournal of Biomedical Science, 2009
Bacterial adherence to epithelial cells is a key virulence trait of pathogenic bacteria. The type 1 fimbriae and the P-fimbriae of uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) have both been described to be important for the establishment of urinary tract ...

Escherichia coli, fimbriae, bacterial persistence and host response induction in the human urinary tract

open access: yesInternational Journal of Medical Microbiology, 2005
Urinary tract infections (UTI) are among the most common bacterial infections in humans. Symptomatic UTIs may be acute, recurrent or chronic but the most frequent form of UTI is asymptomatic bacteruria (ABU). In ABU, the mucosa remains inert, despite the presence of large bacterial numbers in urine.

Imported Retail Beef and Chicken Meat Products Serve as Reservoirs for Emerging Antibiotic‐Resistant Pathotypes of Escherichia coli in Pristine Areas Free From Agricultural Activity

open access: yesMicrobiologyOpen, Volume 15, Issue 2, April 2026.
Retail meat–derived E. coli frequently harbored multidrug‑resistance phenotypes, diverse virulence determinants, and plasmid‑encoded resistance genes with high conjugative potential. Results indicate meat and poultry as underrecognized reservoirs facilitating dissemination of antimicrobial resistance and pathogenic lineages, with imported products ...

Porphyromonas gingivalis Suppresses Interferon‐Gamma Signaling in Macrophages Through a Contact‐Dependent, Gingipain‐Mediated Mechanism

open access: yesMicrobiologyOpen, Volume 15, Issue 2, April 2026.
This study reveals that Porphyromonas gingivalis suppresses IFN‐γ signaling by downregulating STAT1 in macrophages. Gingipain protease activity and the Type IX Secretion System are essential for this immune evasion mechanism. These findings identify a novel bacterial strategy for host immune suppression and suggest new therapeutic targets for P ...

A general procedure for small-scale purification of fimbriae expressed by porcine enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli strains

open access: yesRevista Colombiana de Biotecnología, 2008
Fimbriae expression by enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli strains is a complex process which is controlled by global and local transcriptional regulators and post-transcriptional control.

ETEC colonisation factors disrupt the antigen presenting capacity of porcine intestinal dendritic cells [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC) are not only a major cause of diarrhoea in travellers to and children in developing countries, but also cause neonatal and postweaning diarrhoea in piglets, leading to a reduced feed conversion and a higher mortality rate ...

Biofilm formation in a hydrodynamic environment by novel FimH variants and ramifications for virulence [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
Type 1 fimbriae are surface-located adhesion organelles of Escherichia coli that are directly associated with virulence of the urinary tract. They mediate D-mannose-sensitive binding to different host surfaces by way of the minor fimbrial component FimH.

Type 3 fimbriae of Klebsiella sp.: molecular characterization and role in bacterial adhesion to plant roots [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Bacteriology, 1983
Type 3 fimbriae of Klebsiella were purified and characterized. The fimbriae were 4 to 5 nm in diameter and 0.5 to 2 microns long. In sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, the fimbrillin had an apparent molecular weight of 23,500, and it differed from enterobacterial type 1 fimbrillins in its amino acid composition.

Plant‐produced encapsulin displays non‐typhoidal Salmonella enterica antigens and assembles into mosaic nanoparticles

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, Volume 293, Issue 7, Page 1908-1929, April 2026.
This study investigates the potential of encapsulin as an antigen display platform for the development of a candidate Salmonella vaccine for poultry. Encapsulin constructs were transiently expressed in Nicotiana benthamiana where they accumulated to high levels.

Molecular analysis of type 3 fimbrial genes from Escherichia coli, Klebsiella and Citrobacter species

open access: yesBMC Microbiology, 2010
Background Catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) is the most common nosocomial infection in the United States and is caused by a range of uropathogens.
