Repeatability of three fine motor tests

open access: yesAustralian Journal of Physiotherapy, 1995
This study evaluated the repeatability of three fine motor tasks in normal children aged nine years. Using set procedures and well defined scoring categories, finger drumming, sequential finger/thumb opposition and finger tapping were shown to be repeatable quantitatively and qualitatively.

Cell geometry and membrane protein crowding constrain Escherichia coli growth rate, overflow metabolism, respiration, and maintenance energy

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The physical dimensions and shape of bacterial cells define the surface area available to acquire nutrients and the volume available for synthesizing proteins and DNA. Here, we use computational systems biology to decode the importance of cell geometry as a major determinant of prokaryotic phenotype, including growth rate and metabolic efficiency. This

Latent Transition Analysis of Motor Development Patterns in Preschoolers

open access: yesChildren, 2023
In-group heterogeneity is often neglected during investigations of motor development patterns in children. Moreover, the variation in motor development patterns over time has seldom been examined.

Salmonella lipopolysaccharide‐containing supported lipid bilayers as platforms to study bacteriophage interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present robust protocols for the preparation of supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) incorporating either Salmonella smooth LPS or outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). We use a combination of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM‐D) and fluorescence microscopy to both characterize the SLBs of various compositions and to probe their interactions ...

Effects of Fine Motor Development in the Subsequent Expressive and Receptive Language Skills of Children with Special Needs

open access: yesPhilippine Social Science Journal, 2020
Studies related to developmental psychology have long recognized the importance of motor development but have recently begun to systematically map out its subsequent developmental pathways.  In many international studies, finding evidence on the effects

From mice to humans—divergent strategies for intestinal homeostasis and regeneration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Recent advances such as organoid genome editing, xenotransplantation, imaging, and whole‐genome sequencing have enabled direct studies of human intestinal stem cells (ISCs). These studies reveal species‐specific features, including slower ISC proliferation, distinct injury responses, slower somatic mutation accumulation in humans, and an inverse ...

Do Motor Difficulties in Infancy Predict 7-year-olds’ Behavioural Health? Findings from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children

open access: yesJournal of Pediatrics: Clinical Practice
Objective: To examine whether fine- and gross-motor skills in infancy predict child behavioral health at 7 years of age. Study design: Longitudinal cohort data from 6,709 English children were analyzed using regression techniques to investigate whether ...

Periodic motor impairments in a case of 48-hour bipolar ultrarapid cycling before and under treatment with valproate [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
Motor impairments of psychiatric patients can be assessed with digital recordings of handwriting tasks. The investigation of patients with bipolar affective disorders differentiates intraindividual changes related to the patient's fluctuating affective ...

Design and analysis strategies for robust microbiome ageing research

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The gut microbiome changes with age and associates with age‐related morbidity and mortality, establishing it as a potential biomarker and intervention target for ageing. Realising this potential requires methodological rigour, yet distinguishing biological signals from methodological artefacts remains challenging across cohorts. This review provides an

DNA methylation at birth and fine motor ability in childhood: an epigenome-wide association study with replication

open access: yesEpigenetics, 2023
Lower fine motor performance in childhood has been associated with poorer cognitive development and neurodevelopmental conditions such as autism spectrum disorder, yet, biological underpinnings remain unclear. DNA methylation (DNAm), an essential process
