Is there a relationship between fingerprint donation and DNA shedding? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
This research investigates the possible relationship between fingerprint donation and DNA shedding. Volunteers were asked to provide a series of fingerprint depletions on glass. The level of fingerprint detail developed and DNA profiling results obtained

Dihydroorotate dehydrogenase (DHODH) regulates trophoblast syncytialization through organelle stress–induced cellular senescence

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The inhibition of mitochondrial dihydroorotate dehydrogenase (DHODH) impairs syncytialization and induces cellular senescence via mitochondrial and endoplasmic reticulum stress in human trophoblast stem cells, elevating sFlt1/PlGF levels, a hallmark of placental dysfunction in hypertensive disorders of pregnancy.

Considering digits in a current model of numerical development

open access: yesFrontiers in Human Neuroscience, 2015
Numerical cognition has long been considered the perfect example of abstract information processing. Nevertheless, there is accumulating evidence in recent years suggesting that the representation of number magnitude may not be entirely abstract but ...

Finger-counting in the Upper Palaeolithic

open access: yes, 2021
Upper Palaeolithic hand stencils at Cosquer Cave have been interpreted as forming a numeric code. The present analysis examined ‘digits’ at Cosquer and Gargas from the perspectives of modern ethnography, shared cognitive functioning and human hand anatomy, concluding that correspondences between the 27,000-year-old hand stencils and modern finger ...

Anchorage‐independent and faster growth in clonal population from UV‐irradiated NER‐deficient cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
UV‐irradiated cells expressing a DDB2 mutant protein unable to interact with PCNA (DDB2PCNA‐) form clones able to grow without anchorage. Different experimental approaches reveal heterogeneity in cell cycle regulation and drug response within these clones, emphasizing the crucial role of the DDB2‐PCNA interaction in preventing cellular transformation ...

The use of ideas of Information Theory for studying "language" and intelligence in ants

open access: yes, 2009
In this review we integrate results of long term experimental study on ant "language" and intelligence which were fully based on fundamental ideas of Information Theory, such as the Shannon entropy, the Kolmogorov complexity, and the Shannon's equation ...

Finger ridge-count variability in Sub-Saharan Africa

open access: yesAnnals of Human Biology, 1979
Mean finger ridge-count data were obtained, primarily from literature sources, for 31 male and 24 female sub-Saharan African samples. The 10 finger ridge-counts and total ridge-count were used as independent variables in a multiple regression analysis, latitude and longitude serving in turn as the dependent variables.

Promiscuous stimulation of HSP70 ATPase activity by parasite‐derived J‐domains

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum exports three highly homologous yet functionally divergent J‐domain proteins into human erythrocytes. Here, we show that J‐domains isolated from all three proteins effectively stimulate the ATPase activity of both endogenous host and exported parasite HSP70 chaperones.

Accelerated materials property predictions and design using motif-based fingerprints

open access: yes, 2015
Data-driven approaches are particularly useful for computational materials discovery and design as they can be used for rapidly screening over a very large number of materials, thus suggesting lead candidates for further in-depth investigations.
