Finite-Element Updating of the University of Exeter Forum Walkway [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
This paper presents the finite element (FE) updating of a walkway, part of the University of Exeter’s Forum building. The walkway is a relatively slender structure with natural frequencies in the range that can be excited by human induced vibrations.

Continuum Mechanics Modeling of Flexible Spring Joints in Surgical Robots

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
A new mechanical model of a tendon‐actuated helical extension spring joint in surgical robots is built using Cosserat rod theory. The model can implicitly handle the unknown contacts between adjacent coils and numerically predict spring shapes from straight to significantly bent under actuation forces.

Bayesian finite element model updating based on Markov chain population competition

open access: yesJixie qiangdu
The traditional Markov chain Monte Carlo(MCMC) simulation method is inefficient and difficult to converge in high dimensional problems and complicated posterior probability density. In order to overcome these shortcomings, a Bayesian finite element model ...

Clustering of Parameter Sensitivities: Examples from a Helicopter Airframe Model Updating Exercise

open access: yesShock and Vibration, 2009
The need for high fidelity models in the aerospace industry has become ever more important as increasingly stringent requirements on noise and vibration levels, reliability, maintenance costs etc. come into effect.

ChicGrasp: Imitation‐Learning‐Based Customized Dual‐Jaw Gripper Control for Manipulation of Delicate, Irregular Bio‐Products

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Automated poultry processing lines still rely on humans to lift slippery, easily bruised carcasses onto a shackle conveyor. Deformability, anatomical variance, and hygiene rules make conventional suction and scripted motions unreliable. We present ChicGrasp, an end‐to‐end hardware‐software co‐designed imitation learning framework, to offer a ...

Parameter Identification of Composite Materials Based on Spectral Model by Using Model Updating Method

open access: yesInternational Journal of Polymer Science, 2018
A model updating approach based on a spectral element model and solved with a particle swarm optimization (PSO) method is proposed to identify the vibration-damping properties of composite materials.

Compliant Pneumatic Feet with Real‐Time Stiffness Adaptation for Humanoid Locomotion

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
A compliant pneumatic foot with real‐time variable stiffness enables humanoid robots to adapt to changing terrains. Using onboard vision and pressure control, the foot modulates stiffness within each gait cycle, reducing impact forces and improving balance. The design, cast in soft silicone with embedded air chambers and Kevlar wrapping, offers durable,
