A simplified approach to hydraulic fracturing of rocks based on Finite Fracture Mechanics
AbstractThis work presents a coupled approach, based on Finite Fracture Mechanics (FFM), to preliminarily investigate hydraulic fracturing of rocks. The novelty of the criterion relies on the assumption of a finite crack extension and on the simultaneous fulfillment of a stress requirement and the energy balance.

Finite Fracture Mechanics versus Phase Field: a case study on the crack onset from circular holes under biaxial loading conditions [PDF]
The phenomenon of brittle crack onset stemming from a circular hole embodied in a biaxially loaded infinite plate is herein investigated. Three different approaches are used to determine the biaxial safety domains: Finite Fracture Mechanics, Cohesive ...

A two‐dimensional multiscale finite element analysis framework was established for the first‐generation MoSiBTiC alloy, and the mechanical and fracture‐related parameters of the constituent phases were calibrated through experiments and simulations. The framework provides a basis for analyzing crack propagation behavior in its complex microstructure ...

A finite element strategy applied to intramedullary nailing of the proximal femur [PDF]
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and was awarded by Brunel University. An intramedullary nail is a trauma treatment device used for fracture fixation of long bones. These devices are subject to failure, including lag screw

Coarse‐grained (left) and atomistic (right) models of the shape memory polymer ESTANE ETE 75DT3 are shown schematically. The two representations bridge molecular detail and mesoscopic description. Both models capture shape memory behavior, linking segmental mobility and conformational relaxation of anisotropic chains to macroscopic recovery, and ...

Finite element assisted prediction of ductile fracture in sheet bulging of magnesium alloys [PDF]
There is currently a growing demand for energy efficiency, particularly in reducing the rate of oil consumption. One solution in this area is for the aerospace and automotive industries to produce lighter vehicles that are more fuel efficient.

This study shows that superalloys used in aircraft engine disks become much more prone to deformation at high temperatures if they have been strained during manufacturing. This effect increases with the level of prior strain but eventually reaches a limit.

Influence of Geometric Design on Mechanical Performance of Auxetic Metastructure
Strategic geometric reinforcement transforms auxetic performance. This study evaluates 3D‐printed arrowhead metastructures, revealing that a modified design with local ring reinforcement suppresses premature failure to achieve superior energy absorption and structural efficiency.

Comparison of the constraint parameters in elastic-plastic fracture mechanics
To describe the effect of crack-tip constraint on the stress field for finite cracked bodies, the following most widely used constraint parameters can be employed in elastic-plastic fracture mechanics, namely, local triaxiality parameter, constraint ...
