Identification and characterisation of hemocyanin of the fish louse Argulus (Crustacea: Branchiura)

Journal of Comparative Physiology B, 2015
Hemocyanin transports oxygen in the hemolymph of many arthropod species. Within the crustaceans, this copper-containing protein was thought to be restricted to Malacostraca, while other crustacean classes were assumed to employ hemoglobin or lack any respiratory protein.

Biological control of the fish louse in a rainbow trout fishery

Journal of Fish Biology, 2002
Novel egg‐laying boards were found to be effective in the biological control of the freshwater fish louse Argulus foliaceus in a 12·9 ha rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss fishery which had a high prevalence and intensity of infection of juvenile parasites in the early spring of 1999. Approximately 228 000 egg clutches were harvested during an extensive

Ornamental fish mortality reveals an old parasite introduction: A case study of Koi carp and fish louse

Veterinary Parasitology: Regional Studies and Reports
Koi carp are globally known for their colors and cultural significance. The introduction of these fish to new environments poses a threat to local biodiversity, in addition to releasing parasites, such as argulid ectoparasites. This study presents a record of Argulus japonicus infecting carp in an artificial lake in Southern Brazil using morphological ...

Modelling parasite impacts of aquaculture on wild fish: The case of the salmon louse (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) on out-migrating wild Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) smolt

Preventive Veterinary Medicine, 2023
For effective wild salmon (Salmo salar) conservation in areas where aquaculture of salmon is practiced it is necessary to identify where the key parasite, the salmon louse (Lepeophtheirus salmonis), will have an impact on these wild salmon. A simple modelling structure is implemented in a sample system in Scotland for assessing interaction between wild

Transcriptional analysis of the common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) immune response to the fish louse Argulus japonicus Thiele (Crustacea: Branchiura)

Fish & Shellfish Immunology, 2008
In the present study we investigated changes in transcription levels of a panel of selected immune relevant genes in peripheral blood leucocytes (PBL) and skin samples collected from carp exposed to larval Argulus japonicus. We show that in skin up-regulation of gene transcription of the chemokine CXCa, and to a lesser extent the chemokine receptor ...

Argulus papuensis n. sp., a new fish louse (Crustacea: Branchiura) from Papua New Guinea

Systematic Parasitology, 1991
A new species of Argulus (Crustacea: Branchiura) is described from a sleeper, Bunaka herwerdeni (Weber), in Papua New Guinea. It is characterised by the shape of the respiratory areas, the number and shape of supporting sclerites in the suckers of the first maxilla, as well as the accessory copulatory structures on the third and fourth legs of the male.

Infection of hottentot Pachymetopon blochii by the fish louse Anilocra capensis (Crustacea: Isopoda) in False Bay, South Africa

African Zoology, 2001
The frequency of occurrence, location on the host, abundance, and size and sex distributions of ectoparasitic isopods, Anilocra capensis, on hottentot  Pachymetopon blochii from False Bay, South Africa, were investigated. A. capensis occurred on 5.2 % of examined hosts and were usually attached above the  operculum, posterodorsally to the eye. They did

De novo whole transcriptome analysis of the fish louse, Argulus siamensis: First molecular insights into characterization of Toll downstream signalling molecules of crustaceans

Experimental Parasitology, 2013
Argulus siamensis is a major ectoparasitic pathogen of freshwater fish capable of causing substantial economic loss. None of the available control measures have been able to address the problem of argulosis resourcefully. To combat this pathogen effectively, it is necessary to have a comprehensive understanding of its life processes with information on

Infestation of the parrotfish Sparisoma cretense (Scaridae) by the fish louse Anilocra physodes (Isopoda: Cymothoidae) in the Canary Islands

2000
This study provides evidence that the fish louse, Anilocra physodes has inhabited the Island of Gran Canaria in the Canary Archipelago and that it is the only island in the Archipelago that is infested. Underwater SCUBA visual surveys were conducted on the island of Gran Canaria during the summers of 1993 and 1998, and on the island of Lanzarote (180 ...

Sea Louse Infestation in Wild Juvenile Salmon and Pacific Herring Associated with Fish Farms off the East-Central Coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia

North American Journal of Fisheries Management, 2008
Abstract Reports of infestations of sea lice Lepeophtheirus salmonis and Caligus clemensi in juvenile salmonids in Pacific Canada have been restricted to pink salmon Oncorhynchus gorbuscha and chum salmon O. keta from one salmon-farming region, the Broughton Archipelago of British Columbia.
