Surface normal interpolation for five axis CNC milling
The International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology, 2015This paper presents an algorithm for five-axis CNC interpolation. The algorithm generates cutter location points by interpolating the surface normals along a desired path. The surface normals are represented by line coordinates which tie a orientation vector with a specific point in space.

Five-axis milling of sculptured surfaces of the turbine blade
Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology, 2018PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to determine the influence of a toroidal cutter axis orientation and a variable radius of curvature of the machined contour of sculptured surface on the five-axes milling process. Simulation and experimental research performed in this work are aimed to determine the relationship between the parameters of five-axes ...

Five-axis flank milling of dually defined twisted ruled surfaces
Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part B: Journal of Engineering Manufacture, 2013This article presents an approach based on screw theory and line geometry for the flank milling of dually defined twisted ruled surfaces. The designed surface is defined by a single-parametric dual nonuniform rational basis spline representation, while the tool’s axis is represented by a dual unit vector.

Prediction of cutting force in five-axis flat-end milling
The International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology, 2018Milling force, closely related to machining efficiency and machining quality, is the most important technical parameter in computer numerical control machining. Aiming at five-axis flat-end milling, this paper proposes a milling force prediction model with arbitrary feed direction and cutter workpiece engagement (CWE).

Five-Axis Milling Simulation Based on B-rep Model
2011Formulating the swept volume by a cutter along its path plays an important role in volumetric simulation of five-axis machining. In some cases, the swept volume may experience self-intersection, which is a crucial issue and difficult to be solved. Based on B-rep model, this paper proposes an algorithm for formulating the swept volume for five-axis ball-

The International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology, 2012
When machining complex geometries on five-axis machining centres, the orientation and positioning of the workpiece in the machine workspace are generally chosen arbitrarily by the operator from the Computer-Aided Manufacturing software. Nevertheless, these two factors have considerable influence on the machining time.

Dynamics and Stability Prediction of Five-Axis Flat-End Milling
Journal of Manufacturing Science and Engineering, 2017The tool orientation of a flat-end cutter, determined by the lead and tilt angles of the cutter, can be optimized to increase the machining strip width. However, few studies focus on the effects of tool orientation on the five-axis milling process stability with flat-end cutters.

Cutter Axis Vector Smoothing Algorithm for Five-axis Milling
2018 3rd International Conference on Computer Science and Information Engineering (ICCSIE 2018), 2018In the five-axis milling process, the existing cutter axis vector planning only adjusts the cutter axis vector and neglects the effect on the cutting bandwidth. Considering this problem, a method of adjusting the cutter axis vector by contrasting the change rate of the cutter axis vector is proposed, which not only ensures the cutting bandwidth but ...

Five-axis CNC milling for effective machining of sculptured surfaces
International Journal of Production Research, 1993Abstract In machining of sculptured surfaces on five-axis CNC milling machines, determination of the direction vector of the milling cutter is very important. The direction vector is obtained from the fact that the bottom part of the milling cutter rides on free-form surfaces using a z-map method, and this can be applied to all geometric types of ...
