On the dynamics of flame edges in diffusion-flame/vortex interactions [PDF]

open access: yesCombustion and Flame, 2007
We analyze the local flame extinction and reignition of a counterflow diffusion flame perturbed by a laminar vortex ring. Local flame extinction leads to the appearance of flame edges separating the burning and extinguished regions of the distorted mixing layer.

The Interaction between In-Cylinder Turbulent Flow and Flame Front Propagation in an Optical SI Engine Measured by High-Speed PIV

open access: yesEnergies, 2022
The relationship between the flow field and flame propagation is essential in determining the dynamics and effects of turbulent flow in an optical SI engine.

Dynamics of premixed confined swirling flames

open access: yesComptes Rendus. Mécanique, 2009
Considerable effort is currently being extended to examine the fundamental mechanisms of combustion instabilities and develop methods allowing predictions of these phenomena. One central aspect of this problem is the dynamical response of the flame to incoming perturbations. This question is examined in the present article, which specifically considers

Combustion Dynamics of Swirling Turbulent Flames [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
A generalized Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) methodology has been developed to simulate premixed and non-premixed gas-phase and two-phase combustion in complex flows such as those typically encountered in gas-turbine combustors. This formulation allows the study and analysis of the fundamental physics involved in such flows, i.e., vortex/flame interaction,

Effects of thermal expansion, strain rate, and gravity force on the steady propagation of a premixed flame in semi-closed channels

open access: yesAIP Advances, 2021
The flame dynamics of steady propagation of a premixed flame in semi-closed channels is investigated. The hydrodynamic model takes into account impacts of channel width, thermal expansion, straining effect, and downward gravity force on the flame front ...

Prediction of combustion noise of an enclosed flame by simultaneous identification of noise source and flame dynamics

open access: yesProceedings of the Combustion Institute, 2019
Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) is combined with advanced System Identification (SI) to simultaneously infer models for the source of combustion noise and the dynamic response to velocity fluctuations of a turbulent premixed flame.

Comparing Early Evolution of Flames in X-Ray Bursts in Two and Three Dimensions

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2023
We explore the early evolution of flame ignition and spreading on the surface of a neutron star in three dimensions, in the context of X-ray bursts.

Experimental and Numerical Study of the Trench Fire Spread Rule over a Sloped Uniform Fuel Bed: Rate of Fire Spread, Flame Morphology, and Heat Flux

open access: yesFire, 2023
Trench fires on sloped terrain are always complicated due to the corresponding flame dynamics and heat transfer mechanisms. Flame attachment may increase the rate of fire spread (ROS) by enlarging the heating area of unburned vegetation.

Current Status and Challenges in Data Collection for Aerospace Coatings Deposited by Plasma Spraying

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
An innovative approach has been integrated into the GRENAT project to optimize plasma spraying and coating performance. Raw materials are accelerated and melted in the plasma generated by torches, creating coatings. Monitoring sensors collect process data which are combined with ex situ characterization data.
