Controllers for fault tolerant actuators

open access: yesAviation, 2007
The Fly‐by‐Wire technology enables flexible shaping of both effective dynamics and handling qualities of aircraft. This solution extends aircraft possibilities and supports the pilot by use of high‐level control laws.

Minimum mass sizing of a large low-aspect ratio airframe for flutter-free performance [PDF]

open access: yes
A procedure for sizing an airframe for flutter-free performance is demonstrated on a large, flexible supersonic transport aircraft. The procedure is based on using a two level reduced basis or modal technique for reducing the computational cost of ...

Longitudinal stability augmentation of seaplanes in planing [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The towing tank experiments conducted at Yokohama National University from November 30 to December 9 in 2005 suggested a new way of suppressing a dangerous coupled motion between heave and pitch called porpoising. The research in this paper was developed

Development of Vertical Wind Turbine Blades Using 4D Printing of Composites

open access: yesPolymer Composites, EarlyView.
Vertical axis wind turbine: White blade: Commercial. Black blade: Composite. ABSTRACT This paper presents the procedure to make vertical wind turbine blades using the technique of 4D printing of composites (4DPC). The blades are made using carbon/epoxy composite materials with a fiber volume fraction of about 60%.

Embedding Fiber Segment Interferometry for Localization of Defects in Composite Structures

open access: yesPolymer Composites, EarlyView.
Graphical representation of composite structures with embedded fiber optic sensors for structural health monitoring, enabling strain measurement and damage localization under mechanical loading. ABSTRACT In the area of structural health monitoring (SHM), embedding strain sensors into smart composites is a key strategy for detecting failures arising ...

Determination of critical nondimensional parameters in aircraft dynamic response to random input [PDF]

open access: yes
The critical parameters of subsonic jet aircraft response in a random atmospheric environment are determined. Equations of motion are presented for semirigid aircraft with a flexible primary airfoil.

Fire blocking systems for aircraft seat cushions [PDF]

open access: yes, 1984
A configuration and method for reducing the flammability of bodies of organic materials that thermally decompose to give flammable gases comprises covering the body with a flexible matrix that catalytically cracks the flammable gases to less flammable ...

Virtual Integration Platforms (VIP) –A Concept for Integrated and Interdisciplinary Air Transportation Research and Assessment [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The paper descibes a new methodology for a holistic development of air transportation concepts. The Virtual Integration Plattform (VIP) concept is based on an IT tool chain as well as human collaborative methods to deal with complex systems.

Anticlastic Curvature and Material Freedom

open access: yesphysica status solidi (b), EarlyView.
Anticlastic curvature occurs in bent bars for positive Poisson's ratio; synclastic curvature occurs for negative Poisson's ratio provided the material is homogeneous and elastic. Some planar negative Poisson's ratio materials exhibit anticlastic saddle curvature rather than convex curvature in bending due to effects of 3D structure.

Performance analysis of flexible aircraft with active control [PDF]

open access: yes
Small perturbation equations of motion of a flexible aircraft with an active control technology (ACT) system were developed to evaluate the stability and performance of the controlled aircraft.
