Demystifying the discharge coefficient for flow over thin weirs and sills

open access: yesFlow
A revised derivation of the discharge coefficient for flows over thin weirs and sills in the limits of wall overflow to a free overfall is given. Using dimensional analysis, we show that the discharge coefficient, $C_{d}$ , in the classical weir ...

Enteropathogenic E. coli shows delayed attachment and host response in human jejunum organoid‐derived monolayers compared to HeLa cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) infects the human intestinal epithelium, resulting in severe illness and diarrhoea. In this study, we compared the infection of cancer‐derived cell lines with human organoid‐derived models of the small intestine. We observed a delayed in attachment, inflammation and cell death on primary cells, indicating that host ...

Tip leakage flow structure and cavitation inception in a ducted marine propeller

open access: yesFlow
Cavitation inception and the associated flow structure in the tip region of a ducted propeller are investigated experimentally at varying advance ratios (J) using high-speed imaging and stereoscopic particle image velocimetry (SPIV) measurements in a ...

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Thermally driven cross-shore flows in stratified basins: a review on the thermal siphon dynamics

open access: yesFlow
The sloping boundaries of stratified aquatic systems, such as lakes, are crucial environmental dynamic zones. While the role of sloping boundaries as energy dissipation hotspots is well established, their contribution to triggering large-scale motions ...

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Flow over a cylinder with a small triangular bump

open access: yesFlow
The surface pressure distribution over a circular cylinder with a small, full-span, triangular bump is examined. The geometry of the bump is an isosceles triangle, the height of which is varied from 1.33 % to 5.33 % of the diameter of the cylinder and ...

Numerical Simulation of Flow Field Formed in Water Pump-Sump [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Two fundamental types of flow problems besetting water intakes are swirling flow problems in the pump sump and sediment problems at entrance or within intakes.

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Efficient reduced-order modelling based on HODMD to predict intraventricular flow dynamics

open access: yesFlow
Accurate and efficient modelling of cardiac blood flow is crucial for advancing data-driven tools in cardiovascular research and clinical applications. Recently, the accuracy and availability of computational fluid dynamics methodologies for simulating ...
