Flow induced viscoelasticity in fractures

open access: yes, 2016
The behaviour of viscoelastic surfactant solutions under pressure driven flow in fractures is studied with particle image velocimetry. We demonstrate that flow is selectively retarded in larger conduits and we zoom in to smaller scales in order to ...

Solar photochemistry in flow [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
In recent years, photochemistry has been a highly active research field. This renaissance is linked to the upsurge of photoredox catalysis, a versatile platform for synthetic methodologies using visible light photons as a traceless reagent.

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

How a table modulates the risk of airborne transmission between facing individuals

open access: yesFlow
Airborne transmission has been recognised as an important route of transmission for SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic. While coughing and sneezing are major aerosol sources, asymptomatic transmission highlights the need to study

Importance of vegetation, topography and flow paths for water transit times of base flow in alpine headwater catchments [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The mean transit time (MTT) of water in a catchment gives information about storage, flow paths, sources of water and thus also about retention and release of solutes in a catchment.

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Observed long-term changes in UK river flow patterns: a review [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The aim of this paper is to provide a state-of-the-art assessment of the evidence for long-term river flow changes in the UK. This paper necessarily focuses on climate-driven changes in flow, as opposed to capturing changes caused by human influences ...

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.
