A Dynamic 3D Human Liver Sinusoid Model for Mechanistic Interrogation of Fontan-Associated Liver Disease. [PDF]

open access: yesAdv Sci (Weinh)
This study presents a perfusable 3D bioengineered liver sinusoid platform that integrates biofabrication, 3D cell culture, controlled hemodynamics, and multiparametric characterization to model Fontan‐associated liver disease. By decoupling pressure and hypoxia effects, the system reveals early mechanobiological and profibrotic responses under ...

A One-Dimensional (1D) Computational Fluid Dynamics Study of Fontan-Associated Liver Disease (FALD). [PDF]

open access: yesInt J Numer Method Biomed Eng
Fontan‐associated liver disease (FALD) is a disorder arising from congestion in the liver. This disease is prominent in patients with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS). Through perfusion analysis, we find that as FALD progresses, there are increased pressures and decreased flow to certain regions of liver tissue.

5D Flow MRI Reveals Respiration‐Driven Changes in Blood Flow Energetics in Congenital Heart Disease

open access: yesMagnetic Resonance in Medicine, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Purpose Hemodynamic monitoring is essential for patients with right‐sided congenital heart disease (CHD). Respiration may have an increased impact on pulmonary flow in these patients that cannot be assessed by standard tools including 4D flow MRI. This study uses 5D flow MRI to assess respiratory‐cycle variations in flow energetics in patients

Varicocelectomy Restores Spermatogenesis in Fontan‐Associated Varicocele: A Two‐Case Series

open access: yesIJU Case Reports, Volume 9, Issue 4, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Introduction Fontan circulation may cause chronic venous hypertension and predispose patients to varicocele and infertility, but the clinical significance of surgical treatment remains unclear. Case Presentation We describe two patients with Fontan circulation who developed Fontan‐associated varicocele (FAVC).

Association of Fontan Circulation With Gut Microbiome Derived Straight and Branched Short Chain Fatty Acids

open access: yesJournal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Volume 41, Issue 6, Page 1825-1836, June 2026.
Adults with Fontan circulation (n = 20) and matched controls underwent body composition, frailty testing, CPET, and NICaS hemodynamics. Plasma short‐chain fatty acids were quantified by LC–MS/MS. Fontan patients had higher straight and branched SCFAs, correlating with lower muscle mass, greater frailty, reduced VO2max, and worse resting/postexercise ...

Early‐Onset Digestive System Cancers: Risk Factors and Clinicopathological and Molecular Features Across Organ Sites

open access: yesCancer Science, Volume 117, Issue 5, Page 1223-1234, May 2026.
Shared risk factors, clinical features, and tumor characteristics across multiple early‐onset cancer types are shown in this Graphical Abstract. Integrative approaches combining molecular pathology, oncology, and population sciences offer opportunities to clarify underlying mechanisms and help us develop preventive strategies for early‐onset cancers ...

Phenotyping of Fontan‐Associated Renal Physiology and Disease

open access: yesComprehensive Physiology, Volume 16, Issue 2, April 2026.
In patients with a Fontan circulation, both kidney function and glomerular injury progressively decline with age, with a stronger decline than in healthy individuals. Additionally, intrarenal haemodynamics in patients with a Fontan circulation demonstrate decreased venous and arterial compliance, evident through elevated venous impedance and renal ...

REgistry Of Catheter AbLation After Congenital Heart Disease Surgery(REAL‐CHD Registry)

open access: yesJournal of Arrhythmia, Volume 42, Issue 2, April 2026.
Catheter ablation for postoperative CHD‐related arrhythmias is increasingly performed in Japan and can be achieved with acceptable safety. ABSTRACT Background Advances in surgical management have improved long‐term survival in patients with congenital heart disease (CHD), leading to a growing population of adults with postoperative arrhythmias. However,

Comparison of Rifampin and Isoniazid for Latent Tuberculosis Infection in Kidney Transplant Candidates: Focus on Tolerability and Treatment Completion

open access: yesTransplant Infectious Disease, Volume 28, Issue 2, March/April 2026.
This study comparing 4‐month rifampin with 9‐month isoniazid for latent tuberculosis in kidney transplant candidates showed higher treatment completion rates and no transaminase elevations in the rifampin group. However, some patients experienced an increase in blood pressure while taking antihypertensive medications known to interact with rifampin ...
