Food logging: an information literacy perspective [PDF]

open access: yesAslib Journal of Information Management, 2017
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to explore the meaning of information literacy (IL) in food logging, the activity of recording food intake and monitoring weight and other health conditions that may be affected by diet, using applications (apps) accessed through mobile devices and personal computers.Design/methodology/approachData were gathered from

Autophagy and mitophagy in pancreatic β‐cell homeostasis and their involvement in diabetes pathophysiology

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This review focuses on the role of autophagy and mitophagy in maintaining pancreatic β‐cell function and homeostasis. We discuss how genetic defects affecting these pathways contribute to the development of type 1, type 2, monogenic, and gestational diabetes. We further explore their potential as therapeutic targets. Created in BioRender.

Informing food policy: balancing the evidence [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the Nutrition Society, 2010
The paper considers some of the reasons why governments develop food policies, gives examples of what is in food policies at the Scottish and UK levels and explores ways of effectively providing balanced evidence for policy development. It discusses the challenges of exchanging knowledge between the science and policy communities, given their different

Translophagy—A potential link between autophagy impairment and translational errors

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neurodegenerative diseases are characterised by the accumulation of abnormal proteins and protein aggregates, but their origin often remains unknown. We propose that selective autophagy removes damaged protein‐making machinery, preventing errors during protein synthesis.

L‐aspartate oxidase provides new insights into fumarate reduction in anaerobic darkness in Synechocystis sp. PCC6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Synechocystis strains deficient in succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) secrete more succinate than the WT under dark anaerobic conditions, supporting that SDH then primarily acts as SDH, not as a fumarate reductase. L‐aspartate oxidase (Laspo) from Synechocystis is functional under anaerobic conditions, reducing fumarate to succinate.

The heterodimeric amino acid transporters (HAT) of the SLC7/SLC3 family: A structure−function relationships and relevance to human pathology

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Heterodimeric amino acid transporters consist of SLC7 and SLC3 family proteins arranged in a conserved structural organization. They regulate nutrient transport across cell membranes, supporting essential cellular functions. These transporters also contribute to xenobiotic/drug uptake and distribution.

Metastatic niche shaped by host factors influences disseminated cancer cell fate

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Metastasis is shaped not only by cancer cells but also by the environments they encounter. This review explores how factors such as aging, diet, the microbiome, lifestyle, and environmental exposures remodel organ‐specific niches in the lung, liver, bone, and brain, influencing where metastatic cells survive, remain dormant, or grow, and ultimately ...

Informed Consent and Food Politics

open access: yes, 2013
“There is this deliberate veil that’s dropped between us and where our food is coming from. The industry doesn’t want you to know the truth about what you’re eating because if you knew, you might not want to eat it,” says narrator, Eric Schlosser, of 2008 film Food Inc.“This isn’t just about what we are eating.
