Future challenges to microbial food safety [PDF]

open access: yes
Despite significant efforts by all parties involved, there is still a considerable burden of foodborne illness, in which micro-organisms play a prominent role.

Neighborhood Socioeconomic Status and Short‐Term Functional Outcomes in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, Accepted Article.
Objective Individuals with SLE can accumulate functional status (FS) impairment. We evaluated the association between neighborhood socioeconomic disadvantage, as measured by the area deprivation index (ADI), and FS in a national SLE sample. Methods Data were derived from RISE, a national electronic health record‐based registry.

Consumer Purchasing Behavior in Response to Media Coverage of Avian Influenza [PDF]

open access: yes
Understanding consumer response to food safety information is important for quantifying consumer response to food safety events, predicting market impacts, and developing appropriate risk communication strategies.

Harnessing Fungal Biowelding for Constructing Mycelium‐Engineered Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Mycelium‐bound composites (MBCs) offer low‐carbon alternatives for construction, yet interfacial bonding remains a critical challenge. This review examines fungal biowelding as a biocompatible adhesive, elucidating mycelium‐mediated interfacial mechanisms and their role in material assembly. Strategies to optimize biowelding are discussed, highlighting

Food safety and risk analysis through examination of toxic metals in food products [PDF]

open access: yes, 2023
Nutrition is one of the most important elements that affect human health, work ability and length of life. That is why it is necessary that the food products which are consumed daily are of high quality, but also safe, that is, do not contain substances harmful to the body. Food safety in all branches of food industry (production, processing, packaging,

Handbook of Establishing and Maintaining Oxygen‐Free Atmospheres

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study presents a practical framework for creating oxygen‐free atmospheres at ambient pressure using silane‐doped inert gases. The results show that ultra‐low oxygen levels and strongly reduced water content can be achieved through controlled silane dosing, drying systems, and sensor monitoring.

Occurrence of Multiple stx1 Genes and Rare Genomic Variation in stx1 Shiga Toxin-Producing Escherichia coli

open access: yesMicroorganisms
Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli are important foodborne pathogens. There are several subtypes of the Shiga toxin Stx known, with Stx2 (a–o) being more diverse than Stx1 (a, c, d).

3D (Bio) Printing Combined Fiber Fabrication Methods for Tissue Engineering Applications: Possibilities and Limitations

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Biofabrication aims at providing innovative technologies and tools for the fabrication of tissue‐like constructs for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine applications. By integrating multiple biofabrication technologies, such as 3D (bio) printing with fiber fabrication methods, it would be more realistic to reconstruct native tissue's ...

Tradeoffs, the missing link in food safety risk analysis

open access: yesInternational Conference on the Epidemiology and Control of Biological, Chemical and Physical Hazards in Pigs and Pork, 2009
Many groups, in addition to the producer and veterinarian, are now trying to direct and regulate livestock management practices. For example, in 2008 California passed a law regulating the "confinement of certain fann animals . ". The U.S. Congress recently introduced a bill restricting the use of on-farm antibiotics. Some organizations are blaming the
