Green Synthesis of Bioactive Hydroxyapatite/Cellulose Composites from Food Industrial Wastes

open access: yesJournal of Inorganic and Organometallic Polymers and Materials, 2022
AbstractThis work aimed at conversion of worthless indurtial wastes to valuable product. Herein, bioactive composites based on bacterial cellulose (BC) and eggshell or eggshell-derived hydroxyapatite (HAp) were prepared by a green method using Gluconacetobacter xylinum bacteria.

Sensitivity of nutritional and microbial content of food wastes to drying technologies

open access: yesScientific African, 2022
The recovery of food waste fraction of municipal solid waste and value addition has not received attention despite the high composition in the solid waste stream. This paper presents a study on the drying of food waste, the safety and nutritional quality

Municipal solid waste composition and food loss reduction in Kyoto City [PDF]

open access: hybridJournal of Material Cycles and Waste Management, 2017
For 35 years, Kyoto City has conducted detailed household waste composition surveys under the guidance of Kyoto University by dividing household waste into approximately 400 categories. In addition, the city has conducted detailed composition surveys of commercial waste generated by businesses.

On the Prevention of Avoidable Food Waste from Domestic Households

open access: yesRecycling, 2018
Unconsumed food impacts on the environment via the wasteful use of resources in its production and via its disposal. Householders would ideally only generate food waste that is not considered edible (unavoidable food waste) and the disposal of edible ...

Pectin content and composition from different food waste streams

open access: yesFood Chemistry, 2016
In the present paper, 26 food waste streams were selected according to their exploitation potential and investigated in terms of pectin content. The isolated pectin, subdivided into calcium bound and alkaline extractable pectin, was fully characterized in terms of uronic acid and other sugar composition, methylation and acetylation degree. It was shown

Effects of organic composition on mesophilic anaerobic digestion of food waste [PDF]

open access: yesBioresource Technology, 2017
Anaerobic digestion of food waste (FW) has been widely investigated, however, little is known about the influence of organic composition on the FW digestion process. This study aims to identify the optimum composition ratios of carbohydrate (CA), protein (CP) and lipid (EE) for maintaining high methane yield and process stability. The results show that

The quantity of food waste in the garbage stream of southern Ontario, Canada households.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2018
There is little consensus on the amount of worldwide food waste generation because many current estimates are indirect and link back to the same limited primary datasets, with much of the data originating from fieldwork undertaken in the 1970s and 1980s.

Effects of organic composition on the anaerobic biodegradability of food waste [PDF]

open access: yesBioresource Technology, 2017
This work investigated the influence of carbohydrates, proteins and lipids on the anaerobic digestion of food waste (FW) and the relationship between the parameters characterising digestion. Increasing the concentrations of proteins and lipids, and decreasing carbohydrate content in FW, led to high buffering capacity, reduction of proteins (52.7-65.0%)
