Sudden anaerobization in Amphibacillus xylanus increases intracellular labile ferrous iron and inhibits cell growth

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Abruptly changing from aerobic to anaerobic conditions (sudden anaerobization) induced growth inhibition and a significant increase in intracellular labile ferrous iron in the aerotolerant anaerobe Amphibacillus xylanus. We found that free flavins mediate efficient electron transfer from NADH to ferric iron under anaerobic conditions, suggesting that ...

Life force and death force in Life force and death force in

open access: yesIlha do Desterro, 2008
Frieda Lawrence first introduced her husband to the work of Sigmund Freud when the last draft of Sons and Lovers was being finished. That's why critics, even now, wonder about the extent of the influence Fredian theories might have had upon the novel.

UiO‐66 metal–organic frameworks in biomedicine: From structural tunability to bioimaging, photodiagnostics, and photodynamic cancer therapy

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
UiO‐66(Zr) metal–organic frameworks are chemically stable, biocompatible, and highly tunable nanomaterials. Their modular structure enables controlled drug delivery, multimodal bioimaging, and light‐activated photodynamic therapy, supporting integrated diagnostic and therapeutic (theranostic) applications in cancer and biomedical research.

How much information is lost by using global-mean climate metrics? an example using the transport sector

open access: yes, 2012
Metrics are often used to compare the climate impacts of emissions from various sources, sectors or nations. These are usually based on global-mean input, and so there is the potential that important information on smaller scales is lost.

On the Terms “Centrifugal Force” and “Force of Inertia” [PDF]

open access: yesNature, 1892
THE retention, in the last edition of Mr. Loney's “Elements of Dynamics,” 1891, of a paragraph (p. 141) which resuscitates the objections formerly urged by some writers against the use of the term “centrifugal force” seems to call for a protest. It is to be regretted that students of dynamics should find absolutely contradictory statements presented to

Hydrostatic pressure activates HIF‐1α via β‐catenin to promote stemness in breast cancer cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
To mimic the elevated intestinal fluid pressure in breast cancers, we loaded human breast cancer cells (MCF‐7, MDA‐MB‐453, and BT‐474) to 50 mmHg hydrostatic pressure. Hydrostatic pressure exposure upregulated HIF‐1α and induced stemness in MCF‐7 and BT‐474 cells.

Forcing for hat inductive definitions in arithmetic

open access: yes, 2014
By forcing, we give a direct interpretation of inline image into Avigad's inline image. To the best of the author's knowledge, this is one of the simplest applications of forcing to “real problems”

Forcing Graphs to be Forcing

open access: yes
Sidorenko's conjecture states that the number of copies of any given bipartite graph in another graph of given density is asymptotically minimized by a random graph. The forcing conjecture further strengthens this, claiming that any minimizer in fact needs to be quasi-random.
