Chameleon sequences reveal structural effects in proteins representing micelle‐like distribution of hydrophobicity

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Amino acids sequence of two different proteins with the same sequence (chameleon sequence—black boxes) represent in 3D structure of the proteins different secondary structures: HHHH—helical and BBB—Beta‐structural. The chains folded in water environment adopt different III‐order structures in which the chameleon fragments appear to adopt similar status

Determinsimul climatic al producerii fenofazelor la specii forestiere cu serii maximale din România [Climatic determinism in the occurrence of phenophases for forest species with maximum time series from Romania] [PDF]

open access: yesBucovina Forestieră, 2015
The paper analyze the relationship between phenophase timming of different forest species and climate (large scale circulation expressed by NAO and the local climate expressed by temperatures), for 40 phenological time series between 1946-1965 and 1962 ...

Exon 7 splicing of ERα predicts poor prognosis and increases phenotypic heterogeneity in luminal a subtype breast cancer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
ERα splice variant ERα∆7 lacks the C‐terminus, and its expression may change phenotypes of breast cancers. Our results showed that ERα∆7 is found in the luminal A subtype, and elevated ERα∆7 levels are linked to improved cell survival with lower proliferation and migration.

Efficacies of various forcing components contributing to aircraft climate impact

open access: yes, 2013
The net impact of aviation on global climate results from a combination of individual contributions (e.g. from CO2, ozone, and methane changes, contrails).

Forcing, damping and detuning for single and coupled Van der Pol oscillators

open access: yes, 2014
We use Melnikov function techniques together with geometric methods of bifurcation theory to study the interactions of forcing, damping and detuning on resonant periodic orbits for single and coupled forced Van Der Pol oscillators. For a coupled pair the

Evolutionarily divergent DUF4465 domains have a common vitamin B12‐binding function

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We show that DUF4465 family proteins, widespread across bacteria from gut microbiomes, hydrothermal vents, and soil, share a common vitamin B12‐binding function. These augmented β‐jellyroll proteins bind vitamin B12 via extended loops. Our findings establish sequence‐diverse DUF4465 proteins as a widespread class of B12‐binding proteins, highlighting ...

Comments on “rethinking the lower bound on aerosol radiative forcing” [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Stevens (2015, hereinafter S15) used energy balance arguments to estimate a lower limit on real-world aerosol forcings. The essence of this argument is that we expect any externally forced component of the warming between preindustrial and 1950 to have ...

“Rhythm in the Force of Forces”

open access: yesCritical Times, 2019
Abstract This essay is addressed to discrepancies between musical and political time. It uses the death of Hugh Masekela to consider the changing pattern of intergenerational relationships and the place of music within local and transnational freedom movements.

Large‐scale bidirectional arrayed genetic screens identify OXR1 and EMC4 as modifiers of αSynuclein aggregation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Activation of the mitochondrial protein OXR1 increases pSyn129 αSynuclein aggregation by lowering ATP levels and altering mitochondrial membrane potential, particularly in response to MSA‐derived fibrils. In contrast, ablation of the ER protein EMC4 enhances autophagic flux and lysosomal clearance, broadly reducing α‐synuclein aggregates.

Comparison of forcing functions in magnetohydrodynamics

open access: yes, 2017
Results are presented of direct numerical simulations of incompressible, homogeneous magnetohydrodynamic turbulence without a mean magnetic field, subject to different kinetic forcing functions commonly used in the literature.
