Enteropathogenic E. coli shows delayed attachment and host response in human jejunum organoid‐derived monolayers compared to HeLa cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) infects the human intestinal epithelium, resulting in severe illness and diarrhoea. In this study, we compared the infection of cancer‐derived cell lines with human organoid‐derived models of the small intestine. We observed a delayed in attachment, inflammation and cell death on primary cells, indicating that host ...

Finetuning foundation models for joint analysis optimization in High Energy Physics

open access: yesMachine Learning: Science and Technology
In this work we demonstrate that significant gains in performance and data efficiency can be achieved in High Energy Physics (HEP) by moving beyond the standard paradigm of sequential optimization or reconstruction and analysis components.

The Impact of Occupancy Dynamics on Indoor CO2 Forecasting: A Cross-Scenario Evaluation

open access: yesForecasting
Indoor CO2 forecasting supports proactive ventilation control that balances air quality with energy efficiency. While Machine Learning (ML) models have shown strong performance in controlled settings such as schools, their generalization across indoor ...

Organoids in pediatric cancer research

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Organoid technology has revolutionized cancer research, yet its application in pediatric oncology remains limited. Recent advances have enabled the development of pediatric tumor organoids, offering new insights into disease biology, treatment response, and interactions with the tumor microenvironment.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Generative AI and the Foundation Model Era: A Comprehensive Review

open access: yesBig Data and Cognitive Computing
Generative artificial intelligence and foundation models have changed machine learning by allowing systems to produce readable text, realistic images, and other multimodal content with little direct input from a user.

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

A Two-Stage Approach to Improve Poverty Mapping Spatial Resolution

open access: yesRemote Sensing
Global extreme poverty has fallen dramatically over the past two centuries, yet hundreds of millions remain impoverished, underscoring the need for scalable monitoring tools. In Mexico, poverty metrics are available only sporadically in terms of time and
