Forecasting the Dialysis Burden in Japan: Validation‐Based Projections of Prevalence and Incidence Through 2050

open access: yesTherapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Japan has one of the highest dialysis prevalence rates worldwide and a shrinking, aging population. Whether dialysis burden has entered a sustained post‐peak phase or whether recent declines partly reflect pandemic‐related disruptions remains uncertain.

Redefining Significance: Robustness and Percent Fragility Indices in Biomedical Research

open access: yesStats
The p-value has long been the standard for statistical significance in scientific research, but this binary approach often fails to consider the nuances of statistical power and the potential for large sample sizes to show statistical significance ...

COVID‐19 lockdown consequences on body mass index and perceived fragility related to physical activity: A worldwide cohort study

open access: yesHealth Expectations, 2022
Background This paper is a follow‐up study continuing the COVISTRESS network previous research regarding health‐related determinants. Objective The aim was to identify the main consequences of COVID‐19 lockdown on Body Mass Index and Perceived Fragility,

Use of a 5-item modified Fragility Index for risk stratification in patients undergoing surgical management of distal humerus fractures

open access: yesJSES International, 2021
Introduction We hypothesized that the modified Fragility Index (mFI), which predicts surgical complications, would be applicable to surgical complications in patients older than 50 years with distal humerus fractures (DHF).

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Fragility Index - Perioperative anesthesiology guidelines 2012-2022

open access: yes, 2023
Introduction: The Fragility Index (FI) and the FI family are statistical tools that measure the robustness of randomized controlled trials (RCT) by examining how many patients would need a different outcome to change the statistical significance of the ...

Hyperosmotic stress induces PARP1‐mediated HPF1‐dependent mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Sorbitol‐induced hyperosmotic stress rapidly induces reversible mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation (MARylation) on PARP1 without the signs of genotoxic signaling. We show that PARP1 autoMARylation is HPF1 dependent and forms hydroxylamine‐resistant O‐glycosidic linkages.

Association between the Triglyceride-glucose index and fragility fractures among US adults: insights from NHANES

open access: yesDiabetology & Metabolic Syndrome
Background The triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index, a recognized marker for insulin resistance, holds potential implications for skeletal health. However, its relationship with fragility fractures remains uncertain.
