Defaunation as a trigger for the additional loss of plant species in fragmented landscapes: considerations on the state of Espírito Santo, southeastern Brazil

open access: yesRodriguésia
Here we present a brief review on how the loss of fauna can cause a concomitant loss in plant diversity in the state of Espírito Santo, focusing on the context of current habitat loss and fragmentation and the importance of the mutualistic interactions ...

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

Nonthermal fragmentation of C60

open access: yes, 2001
A theoretical study of the subpicosecond fragmentation of C60 clusters in response to ultrafast laser pulses is presented. We simulate the laser excitation and the consequent nonequilibrium relaxation dynamics of the electronic and nuclear degrees of ...

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

The Politics of Unification in a Fragmented World: Metapopulism and the Precariat

open access: yesOpen Cultural Studies, 2018
Neoliberal capitalism intensified the social fragmentation, which resulted in the upswing of heterogeneous communities without a unifying meta-language that was liberal universalism of citizenship.

Forest fragmentation in China and its effect on biodiversity

open access: yesBiological Reviews of The Cambridge Philosophical Society, 2019
Land‐use change is fragmenting natural ecosystems, with major consequences for biodiversity. This paper reviews fragmentation trends – historical and current – in China, the fourth largest country on Earth, and explores its consequences.

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

La sécurité alimentaire : la construction d’un bien public global ?

open access: yesOléagineux, Corps gras, Lipides, 2012
Soaring of food prices in 2007/08 has put again food security high in the global agenda. Several elements of explanation have been put forward to explain this crisis, including traditional ones such as imbalance supply/demand and stocks, energy effect ...
