Brain asymmetry as minimization of free energy: a theoretical model

open access: yesRoyal Society Open Science
The asymmetry between the left and right sides seems to be a general principle of organization of the nervous systems in Bilateria, providing the foundations for a plethora of leftward and rightward biases in behaviour as documented in species ranging ...

Exploration, Novelty, Surprise and Free Energy Minimisation

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychology, 2013
This paper reviews recent developments under the free energy principle that introduce a normative perspective on classical economic (utilitarian) decision-making based on (active) Bayesian inference.

Molecular model of OCP-phycobilisome complex formation [PDF]

open access: yesКомпьютерные исследования и моделирование, 2014
A molecular model of phicobilisome complex with a quenching protein OCP which regulates the energy transfer from phicobilisome to photosystem in photosynthetic apparatus of cyanobacteria has been developed.

Magnetic free energy at elevated temperatures and hysteresis of magnetic particles

open access: yes, 2001
We derive a free energy for weakly anisotropic ferromagnets which is valid in the whole temperature range and interpolates between the micromagnetic energy at zero temperature and the Landau free energy near the Curie point T_c.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Quantum thermodynamics with missing reference frames: Decompositions of free energy into non-increasing components

open access: yes, 2005
If an absolute reference frame with respect to time, position, or orientation is missing one can only implement quantum operations which are covariant with respect to the corresponding unitary symmetry group G. Extending observations of Vaccaro et al., I

A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These

An isoform of 14‐3‐3 protein regulates transbilayer lipid movement at the plasma membrane

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Loss of 14‐3‐3ζ in CHO cells confers resistance to exogenous phosphatidylserine (PS) and impairs endocytosis‐independent inward flip‐flop of fluorescent PS at the plasma membrane. RNAi‐mediated knockdown reproduces this defect, while no additive effect is seen in ATP11C‐deficient cells.

Free energy and dendritic self-organisation

open access: yesFrontiers in Systems Neuroscience, 2011
In this paper, we pursue recent observations that, through selective dendritic filtering, single neurons respond to specific sequences of presynaptic inputs.

Cluster Approximation for the Farey Fraction Spin Chain

open access: yes, 2005
We consider the Farey fraction spin chain in an external field $h$. Utilising ideas from dynamical systems, the free energy of the model is derived by means of an effective cluster energy approximation.
