The Role of Free Radical Scavengers in Reperfusion

1988
Recently, oxygen radicals have been implicated in the pathogenesis of many diseases. This is reflected in the many conferences devoted to this topic and in the numerous books that cover the field in a systematic manner [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]. Much attention is currently focused on a role for oxygen radicals in heart and blood-vessel abnormalities and in ...

Prevention of testicular damage by free-radical scavengers

Urology, 1997
The role of free radicals as mediators of ischemic injury to the testicle has been the subject of much investigation. We studied whether the testicular damage induced in the rat by cadmium chloride (CdCl2) can be prevented by administration of free-radical scavengers.Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 45) were divided into 9 groups as follows: a negative control

Free Radical Scavengers and Spin Traps

1997
This chapter explores the role of free radical scavengers and spin trapping agents in preventing cell death. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) can be generated in ischemic/reperfused tissues by a number of pathways. Electron transport associated with mitochondrial membranes is a major contributor to ROS formation in the normoxic brain.

Studies on the activity of bepridil as a scavenger of free radicals

Biochemical Pharmacology, 1990
Bepridil, a calcium antagonist with anti-anginal, anti-ischemic, and anti-arrhythmic properties was assessed for its ability to scavenge free radicals. Bepridil reduced the stable free radical 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazil (DPPH) in the molar ratio 2:1 and, in this respect, was as active as the reference anti-oxidants hydroquinone and alpha-tocopherol.

Antioxidants and free radical scavengers

1994
An antioxidant may be defined as any substance that can delay or prevent the oxidation of a substrate when it is present in small amounts relative to the amount of the substrate. Antioxidant protection consists of three sequential levels of defensive activity. The first level of defense—which is largely enzymatic—involves enzymes, the activity of which
