Hyperosmotic stress induces PARP1‐mediated HPF1‐dependent mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Sorbitol‐induced hyperosmotic stress rapidly induces reversible mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation (MARylation) on PARP1 without the signs of genotoxic signaling. We show that PARP1 autoMARylation is HPF1 dependent and forms hydroxylamine‐resistant O‐glycosidic linkages.

The Entropy of Mixing in Self-Assembly and the Role of Surface Tension in Modeling the Critical Micelle Concentration

open access: yesColloids and Interfaces
A theory for the micelle formation of nonionic head-tail amphiphiles (detergents) in aqueous solutions is derived based on the traditional molecular thermodynamic modeling approach and a variant of the Flory–Huggins theory that goes beyond lattice models.

The Effect of Free Volume on the Crystallization of Al87Ni8Gd5 Amorphous Alloy

open access: yesMetals, 2022
The effect of free volume on the process of crystallization of an Al87Ni8Gd5 amorphous alloy is investigated. The deformation of the amorphous alloys leads to the formation of shear bands, which contain an enhanced free volume concentration.

Entropy, free volume, and cooperative relaxation

open access: yesJournal of Research of the National Institute of Standards and Technology, 1997
The high frequency end of the relaxation spectrum for polymer molecules involves the rotation of the segmental bonds. This fast relaxation process, however, cannot take place easily in the condensed state crowded by the densely packed conformers, necessitating the slower cooperatively synchronous relaxation. As the temperature is lowered, the domain of

Biophysical approaches for studying viral entry

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Viruses infect all living organisms and have been responsible for major epidemics and pandemics. Their ongoing evolutionary battle with host defenses creates a constant need for improved tools to study viral behavior. Advancing methods to probe viral attachment, fusion, and genome release deepen our understanding of how infections begin and support the

Degradation mechanism of the von Willebrand factor A2 domain by nattokinase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Nattokinase, a natto‐derived protease, exhibits potent antithrombotic effects. This study demonstrates that nattokinase directly cleaves the von Willebrand factor (vWF) A2 domain in vitro. Unlike the native regulator ADAMTS13, nattokinase degrades folded vWF independently of shear stress.

Evaluation of the Free Volume Theory to Predict Moisture Transport and Quality Changes During Broccoli Drying [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Moisture diffusion in porous broccoli florets and stalks is modeled using the free volume and Maxwell-Eucken theories. These theories are based on the mobility of water and concern the variation of the effective diffusion coefficient for a wide range of ...

A nano-scale free volume perspective on the glass transition of supercooled water in confinement

open access: yesNew Journal of Physics, 2014
We employ positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) to measure the temperature dependent fluctuations in a local free volume of water confined in a variety of mesoporous materials with different pore sizes and morphologies.

Free volumes in mixed-tacticity poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) determined by viscosimetry and their correlations with structural features and mechanical properties

open access: yesApplied Rheology, 2022
The viscosities of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) with mixed tacticities were determined as functions of temperature and shearing rate via plate–plate viscosimetry, and fitted by a combined Herschel–Bulkley–Cross–Doolittle model while applying Carvalho et

Salmonella lipopolysaccharide‐containing supported lipid bilayers as platforms to study bacteriophage interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present robust protocols for the preparation of supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) incorporating either Salmonella smooth LPS or outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). We use a combination of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM‐D) and fluorescence microscopy to both characterize the SLBs of various compositions and to probe their interactions ...
