Numerical simulation of freeze-up jamming in a skim ice regime

Cold Regions Science and Technology, 2021
Abstract Freeze-up jamming on regulated rivers is an important aspect of cold regions hydropower operations. The timing and nature of freeze-up jamming has a role in reducing effects to winter discharge conveyance. In northern regions with very mild-sloped rivers, skim ice run is of considerable importance to the formation of a thin and stable cover ...

Sea Ice Classification During Freeze-Up Conditions With Multifrequency Scatterometer Data

IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, 2013
Helicopter-borne radar backscatter measurements are analyzed with respect to a multifrequency classification approach of sea ice. Measurements were carried out over the Arctic Ocean during August and September 2007 and represented unusually warm freeze-up conditions.

Elevated Water Tank Freeze‐Ups

Journal AWWA, 1967
This joint discussion on elevated storage tank freeze‐ups was presented at the 1965 AWWA North Central Section meeting at Fargo, North Dakota. John R. Branch of the Minnesota Water Company, Inc., St. Paul, Minnesota, reports on a freeze‐up experience, the facilities of the water system involved, the events and conditions preceding the freeze‐up, and ...

Freeze-Up Processes in the Alaskan Beaufort and Chukchi Seas

OTC Arctic Technology Conference, 2012
Abstract This paper characterizes the processes that presently occur during freeze-upin the Alaskan Beaufort and Chukchi Seas, based on joint-industryinvestigations conducted in 2009-10, 2010-11, and 2011–12. The studies weredesigned to address five specific objectives:describe the ice conditionsthat evolve during ...

Numerical Simulation of Surface and Suspended Freeze-Up Ice Discharges

Impacts of Global Climate Change, 2005
In this paper, a numerical model based on a two-layer ice transport formulation for surface and suspended ice runs for thermal-ice variation along the river during freezeup is presented and validated with an analytical solution and field data from Peace River.

Microwave emission from high Arctic sea ice during freeze‐up

Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, 1984
A cooperative sea ice remote sensing experiment was conducted in the eastern Beaufort Sea and Mould Bay area during the freeze‐up period in October 1981. Airborne millimeter‐wave imagery at 90, 140, and 220 GHz, and nadir microwave radiometric measurements at 19, 22, and 31 GHz, were made from a U. S.

Sea-Ice Freeze-up Forecasts with an Operational Ocean Observatory

Atmosphere-Ocean, 2015
ABSTRACTThe evaluation of a new method for forecasting freeze-up at the eastern end of the Northwest Passage, a principal gateway into the Canadian High Arctic, is presented. The technique uses real-time data from a novel ocean observatory that combines acoustic, cable, and satellite communications technology to provide year-round bihourly data.

Reliable electrical heaters can prevent coal handling equipment freeze-ups

IEEE Transactions on Energy Conversion, 1988
In the winter when coal is stationary or builds up on sloped surfaces, the coal will freeze to hopper and chute walls. The plugged equipment then leads to expensive deratings or complete shutdowns of generating units. Rugged electric heating modules have been proven to efficiently melt the ice bonds and eliminate pluggage caused by freezeups.
