Acquisition of temporal aspects of speech by Canadian English learners of French with previous core vs. immersion backgrounds

open access: yesCanadian Journal of Applied Linguistics
We examined articulation rate (AR), length of inter-pausal units (IPUs), and phonetic rhythm in readings by Canadian English learners of French. Previous production studies of second language (L2) French of Anglophone learners present variable findings ...

Covalently Linked Peptides and Membrane Potential Enable CyaA Segment Translocation

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Using a newly developed Droplet Interface Bilayer‐Pipette assay, the authors show that two segments of the CyaA toxin cross membranes by distinct mechanisms. One segment translocates spontaneously, whereas the translocation of the other depends on membrane potential.

Electronic Chip‐Mimetic Medical Implants for Controllable Sonothermal Treatments

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Inspired by the thermal effect of working electronic chips, which consist of various heterostructures, an sonothermal‐responsive platform has been developed through constructing metal‐semiconductor interface on implants. Biofilm infection and deep vein thrombosis can be successfully treated by controllable ultrasound treatments.

French immersion students' perceptions towards reading in French

open access: yes, 2014
When learning a second language, the ability to read in that language is an important skill as it allows students to become aware of language structures, vocabulary, as well as to promote the culture behind the second language. Research into second language acquisition has shown that vocabulary growth does occur through reading activities.

A Drug‐Gated, Modular STAb‐T Immunotherapy With External Control

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Engineered STAb‐TON cells act as programmable living factories that continuously secrete inactive antibody modules, which assemble extracellularly into a functional T cell engager only upon small‐molecule administration. This externally controlled platform enables reversible, on‐demand regulation of antitumor immunity, establishing a new paradigm for ...

Orthographic Depth and Spelling Development in Immersion Education: A Predictive Framework of Spelling Errors in French

open access: yesLanguages
Orthographic depth varies across alphabetic writing systems and plays a central role in spelling acquisition. In immersion education, a second language (L2) is used as a language of instruction for part of the curriculum, such that learners are primarily

α‐Synuclein Forms Distinct Micelle‐Like Assemblies at Low Ionic Strengths

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
At high ionic strength, α‐synuclein forms diverse assemblies, including oligomers, fibrils, and condensates. Here, we show that at low ionic strength, α‐synuclein adopts a distinct, low‐abundance assembly state. These assemblies maintain a constant size above a critical concentration and do not coalesce, suggesting a micelle‐like organization ...
