Helmholtz Resonance in Korean Bells

open access: yesInternational Scholastic Journal of Science, 2017
Traditional Korean bells are installed above a shallow well with a gap between the bell and the ground, effectively creating a Helmholtz resonator. During installation, the size of the well and the gap is traditionally adjusted, through trial and error ...

C2α‐carbanion‐protonating glutamate discloses tradeoffs between substrate accommodation and reaction rate in actinobacterial 2‐hydroxyacyl‐CoA lyase

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Enzymes of the 2‐hydroxyacyl‐CoA lyase group catalyze the condensation of formyl‐CoA with aldehydes or ketones. Thus, by structural adaptation of active sites, practically any pharmaceutically and industrially important 2‐hydroxyacid could be biotechnologically synthesized. Combining crystal structure analysis, active site mutations and kinetic assays,

Reduced Drift Kinetic Equation for Neoclassical Transport of Helical Plasmas in Ultra-low Collisionality Regime

open access: yes, 1999
"Based on the original five-dimensional drift kinetic equation, a three-dimensional reduced drift kinetic equation has been obtained to describe the neoclassical transport of helical plasmas in ultra-low collisionality regime where the collision ...

PARP inhibitors induce a senescence phenotype in non‐small cell lung carcinoma cell lines

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Talazoparib is the most potent inducer of senescence among different PARP1 inhibitors in human NSCLC cells. In the absence of PARP, no senescence phenotype was observed, demonstrating that PARP1 is necessary for the induction of senescence by this inhibitor.

A FEM-Based Method Using Harmonic Overtones to Determine the Effective Elastic, Dielectric, and Piezoelectric Parameters of Freely Vibrating Thick Piezoelectric Disks

open access: yes, 2013
To gain an understanding of the electroelasticproperties of tactile piezoelectric sensors used in the characterizationof soft tissue, the frequency-dependent electric impedanceresponse of thick piezoelectric disks has been calculatedusing finite element ...

Chameleon sequences reveal structural effects in proteins representing micelle‐like distribution of hydrophobicity

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Amino acids sequence of two different proteins with the same sequence (chameleon sequence—black boxes) represent in 3D structure of the proteins different secondary structures: HHHH—helical and BBB—Beta‐structural. The chains folded in water environment adopt different III‐order structures in which the chameleon fragments appear to adopt similar status

A new method for deducing the effective collision frequency profile in the D-region [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
A method based on linear regularization is presented for the deduction of the effective collision frequency profile in the D-region using an incoherent scatter radar and a colocated riometer.

Establishing an assay to evaluate d‐amino acid oxidase enzyme kinetics and inhibition using WST‐8 redox dye

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This study investigated a novel WST‐8‐based assay for evaluating d‐Amino acid oxidase (DAO) inhibitors. We confirmed its effectiveness using known inhibitors and found that uremic toxins possess relatively weak inhibitory activity compared to existing drugs.

Analysing the significance of small conformational changes and low occupancy states in serial crystallographic data

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This protocol paper outlines methods to establish the success of a time‐resolved serial crystallographic experiment, by means of statistical analysis of timepoint data in reciprocal space and models in real space. We show how to amplify the signal from excited states to visualise structural changes in successful experiments.
