Freshwater prawn culture: a review

Aquaculture, 1990
Abstract Although freshwater prawn farming forms only about 5% of the global aquaculture production of shrimps and prawns it is of considerable local importance, particularly in S.E. Asia. Recent entry into global markets is likely to stimulate renewed interest in Macrobrachium culture.

Studies on the ingestion characteristics of giant freshwater prawn, Chinese prawn and giant tiger prawn

Chinese Journal of Oceanology and Limnology, 2000
The ingestion of giant freshwater prawn, Chinese prawn and giant tiger prawn had continuity and the ingestion high peak occurred at night. Light and temperature had significant effects on the daily ingestion rate (DIR) of giant freshwater prawnMacrobrachium rosenbergii. Red light and blue light favorably induced favorable ingestion.

Osmoregulation in Some Freshwater Prawns

Journal of Experimental Biology, 1957
ABSTRACT A freshwater prawn, Palaemonetes antennarius, from Italy, is shown to have a different level of salt concentration in the blood and urine compared with that of the brackish water P. varians and Palaemon longirostris in Britain.

An improved harvesting net for freshwater prawns

Aquacultural Engineering, 1982
Abstract In Hawaii, because of the transformation from a small-farm operation into fairly large aquacultural enterprises, the need to develop an improved harvesting net for fresh-water prawns has been developed. The design/operation of a mechanized net and the success of the full-scale prototype for the industry is detailed.

Responses of freshwater prawn,Macrobrachium rosenbergii, to chemical attractants

Journal of Chemical Ecology, 1987
Chemoreception in the adults of the freshwater prawnMacrobrachium rosenbergii was investigated under controlled laboratory conditions, using behavioral assays. Tests were carried out on groups, as well as on individuals, all at their intermolt stages of the molt cycle, and prestarved for three to four days.

Applied Nutrition in Freshwater Prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii, Culture

Journal of Applied Aquaculture, 2003
ABSTRACT The freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii, commonly called ‘scampi,’ is the most important culturable freshwater species of prawn with a fairly high growth rate, wide range of temperature (15-35°C) and salinity tolerance. The nutrients required by this species for growth and associated physiological functions are similar to those ...

Oxytetracycline Residues in Giant Freshwater Prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii)

Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, 2001
The distribution of oxytetracycline (OTC) in male and female Macrobrachium rosenbergii was examined after the prawns had been given medicated feed containing OTC at levels of 2.5 and 5.0 g/kg of feed for 1 week and nonmedicated feed thereafter. OTC levels in the heads of both male and female prawns were consistently higher than in the muscles.

Intestinal electrophysiology and transmural ion transport in freshwater prawns

American Journal of Physiology-Cell Physiology, 1980
A steady-state transmural potential difference of 1.63 +/- 0.26 mV (mean +/- SE, lumen negative) is recorded across the isolated, perfused intestine of the freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii, when saline approximating hemolymph in composition is present on both surfaces of the preparation.
