Laser Metal Deposition of Aluminum Alloys 7075 and 5083 with the Addition of Volatile Alloying Elements through Powder Blending

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates laser metal deposition of aluminum alloys EN AW‐7075 and EN AW‐5083, using powder blending to compensate zinc and magnesium evaporation. In situ alloying and ex situ alloying with ZnAl12 and AZ91 preserve near‐standard compositions and improve mechanical properties.

Effects of Commensurability on Stick and Slip Conditions at Solid–Fluid Interface

open access: yesLubricants
We report the results of molecular dynamics simulations of the frictional behavior of a Lennard–Jones fluid confined between two solid crystalline walls.

Extremely high strength and work hardening ability in a metastable high entropy alloy

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2018
Design of multi-phase high entropy alloys uses metastability of phases to tune the strain accommodation by favoring transformation and/or twinning during deformation.

Effect of solution and aging treatments on corrosion performance of laser solid formed Ti-6Al-4V alloy in a 3.5 wt. % NaCl solution

open access: yesJournal of Materials Research and Technology, 2020
The solution and aging treatments (SAT) were adopted to improve the microstructure and the corrosion resistance ability of laser solid formed (LSFed) Ti-6Al-4 V titanium alloy. The effect of the SAT on the electrochemical properties of the LSFed Ti-6Al-4

Seismic performance analysis of Kuala Lumpur air traffic control tower by friction damper [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
In structural earthquake engineering, different kinds of energy absorption devices were invented during last 30 years (Guan et al, 2004). And more than one-decade research has shown that, on account of the virtue of no power requirement, rapid response ...

Friction on a Quantized Vortex in a Superfluid

open access: yes, 1998
We obtain the explicit expression of the friction on a moving quantized vortex, following the formulation of Thouless, Ao and Niu. It is shown that the friction on a moving vortex is sensitive to details but does not change the transverse force.

Investigation of Laser Ablation and Brush Pre‐Treatments for AlCu Cold Roll Bonding in Oxygen‐Free Conditions

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
It is shown that laser ablation pretreatment under oxygen‐free conditions enables copper–aluminium bonding at significantly lower deformation degrees and improved properties compared to mechanical brushing. Laser ablation further increases interface contact area and induces favourable residual stress states and microstructural compatibility ...

Network-Configurations of Dynamic Friction Patterns

open access: yes, 2012
The complex configurations of dynamic friction patterns-regarding real time contact areas- are transformed into appropriate networks. With this transformation of a system to network space, many properties can be inferred about the structure and dynamics ...

Four‐Point Bending Tests at High Temperatures on Commercial MgO‐C Refractory Bricks with and Without Recyclate Considering Different Carbon Contents

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Four‐point bending tests are conducted in an argon atmosphere on commercial MgO‐C brick grades with and without MgO‐C recyclate from room temperature up to 1300 °C. No detrimental effect of the MgO‐C recyclates on bending strength is found. Instead, a decisive influence of the total carbon content is observed, with lower total carbon contents ...

Static and Dry Friction due to Multiscale Surface Roughness

open access: yes, 2008
It is shown on the basis of scaling arguments that a disordered interface between two elastic solids will quite generally exhibit static and "dry friction" (i.e., kinetic friction which does not vanish as the sliding velocity approaches zero), because of
