Investigation of the Effect of Residual Stress Gradient on the Wear Behavior of PVD Thin Films [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
The control of residual stresses has been seldom investigated in multilayer coatings dedicated to improvement of wear behavior. Here, we report the preparation and characterization of superposed structures composed of Cr, CrN and CrAlN layers.

Influence of Surface Finish on the Tribological Performance of AlTiBN Coatings Deposited on Forming Tools

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Aluminum and nitride coatings are used in industry because they are hard, resist wear, and protect against oxidation. Adding boron can improve friction behavior and other properties. This study tests coatings on surfaces with different finishes. Results show smoother surfaces perform better, while rough ones wear faster, although coatings can reduce ...

Friction Model for Tool/Work Material Contact Applied to Surface Integrity Prediction in Orthogonal Cutting Simulation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Tribological behavior at both tool/chip and tool/work material interfaces should be highly considered while simulating the machining process. In fact, it is no longer accurate to suppose one independent constant friction coefficient at the tool/chip ...

Low Cycle Repetitive Loading of Ti‐6Al‐4V‐Epoxy Composite Lattice Structures for Enhanced Energy Dissipation and Damage Tolerance

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Composite Ti–6Al–4V–epoxy lattice structures are additively manufactured and epoxy infiltrated for cyclic loading. At low lattice volume fractions, hybridization produces synergistic gains in stiffness and energy dissipation. At higher volume fractions, synergy diminishes, although composites still exceed metallic lattices in specific energy ...

Behavior of Sand Particles in Sand-Steel Friction

open access: yesSoils and Foundations, 1988
ABSTRACT This paper describes a method for observing the particle behavior near the interface in sand-steel friction tests. A friction testing apparatus was modified to allow the observation of sand particles. Close-up photographs were taken of the sand particles at specified timing in sand-steel friction tests.

Influence of Geometric Design on Mechanical Performance of Auxetic Metastructure

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Strategic geometric reinforcement transforms auxetic performance. This study evaluates 3D‐printed arrowhead metastructures, revealing that a modified design with local ring reinforcement suppresses premature failure to achieve superior energy absorption and structural efficiency.

Optimizing the Tribological Performance of Graphite–Resin Composites: The Role of High Crystallinity, Nano Morphology, and Hydrophobic Surface Modification

open access: yesNanomaterials
Graphite, with its layered structure and weak van der Waals bonding between graphene nano layers, exhibits excellent self-lubricating properties.
