Nanoindentation unidirectional sliding and lateral force microscopy: Evaluation of experimental techniques to measure friction at the nanoscale

open access: yesAIP Advances, 2018
Lateral force microscopy (LFM) is an established technique to assess friction forces at the nanoscale. Nanoindentation followed by unidirectional sliding (NUS) is also used to evaluate friction forces at the micro/nanoscale.

Strong energy enhancement in a laser-driven plasma-based accelerator through stochastic friction [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Conventionally, friction is understood as an efficient dissipation mechanism depleting a physical system of energy as an unavoidable feature of any realistic device involving moving parts, e.g., in mechanical brakes.

Prediction of Surface Topography Parameters in Direct Laser Interference Patterning of Stainless Steel Using Infrared Monitoring and Convolutional Neural Networks

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study presents an infrared monitoring approach for direct laser interference patterning (DLIP) combined with a convolutional neural network (CNN). Thermal emission data captured during structuring are used to predict surface topography parameters.

High-temperature wear performance and mechanism of NM400/NM500 mining machinery steels

open access: yes工程科学学报, 2019
The friction and wear behavior of NM400 and NM500 steels in the temperature range from room temperature to 300℃ were investigated, including the formation of interface oxide, wear surface morphology, and microstructures.

Investigation of Laser Ablation and Brush Pre‐Treatments for AlCu Cold Roll Bonding in Oxygen‐Free Conditions

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
It is shown that laser ablation pretreatment under oxygen‐free conditions enables copper–aluminium bonding at significantly lower deformation degrees and improved properties compared to mechanical brushing. Laser ablation further increases interface contact area and induces favourable residual stress states and microstructural compatibility ...

Non-Amontons behavior of friction in single contacts

open access: yes, 2005
We report on the frictional properties of a single contact between a glassy polymer lens and a flat silica substrate covered either by a disordered or by a self-assembled alkylsilane monolayer.

Characterization of Nitinol Produced by Laser Powder Bed Fusion for Mechanical Metamaterial Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Stabilization of L‐PBF Ni50.7Ti49.3 under low‐cycle loading was investigated. Recoverable strain after cycling was dependent on the amount of applied load. Recovery ratio was 53.4% and 35.1% at intermediate and high load, respectively. The maximum total strain reached 10.3% at a high load of 1200 MPa.

Water-vapor effects on friction of magnetic tape in contact with nickel-zinc ferrite [PDF]

open access: yes
The effects of humidity of moist nitrogen on the friction and deformation behavior of magnetic tape in contact with a nickel-zinc ferrite spherical pin were studied.

On the velocity-strengthening behavior of dry friction

open access: yes, 2014
The onset of frictional instabilities, e.g. earthquakes nucleation, is intimately related to velocity-weakening friction, in which the frictional resistance of interfaces decreases with increasing slip velocity.

FRICTION AND WEAR BEHAVIOR OF SELECTED DENTAL CERAMICS

open access: yesSurface Review and Letters, 2009
The purpose of this study was to determine the friction coefficients and wear rates of six commercially available dental ceramics including IPS Empress 2 (E2), Cergo Pressable Ceramic (CPC), Cercon Ceram (CCS) and Super porcelain EX-3 (SPE). Bovine enamel (BE) was also tested as a reference material for comparison purposes.
