In situ molecular organization and heterogeneity of the Legionella Dot/Icm T4SS

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present a nearly complete in situ model of the Legionella Dot/Icm type IV secretion system, revealing its central secretion channel and identifying new components. Using cryo‐electron tomography with AI‐based modeling, our work highlights the structure, variability, and mechanism of this complex nanomachine, advancing understanding of bacterial ...

Experimental study of solar air heater with C-shaped ribs coated with zeolite [PDF]

open access: yesChemical Industry and Chemical Engineering Quarterly
A study was conducted to determine the heat transmission rate and friction properties of a solar air heater's (SAH) absorber by including a c-shaped rib, with and without perforations, and the efficiency of this absorber with and without zeolite coating ...

One-log call iterative solution of the Colebrook equation for flow friction based on Pade polynomials [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
The 80 year-old empirical Colebrook function zeta, widely used as an informal standard for hydraulic resistance, relates implicitly the unknown flow friction factor lambda, with the known Reynolds number Re and the known relative roughness of a pipe ...

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

Estimating friction factors while drilling [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Petroleum Science and Engineering, 2019
Abstract We design and test an algorithm for estimating the bit angular velocity and side forces on a drill string using only topside measurements fed into an adaptive observer. To derive the algorithm gains the drill string is modeled as a distributed wave equation coupled with Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs) at the boundaries which represent

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

The Puzzling Collapse of Electronic Sliding Friction on a Superconductor Surface

open access: yes, 1998
In a recent paper [Phys. Rev. Lett. 80 (1998) 1690], Krim and coworkers have observed that the friction force, acting on a thin physisorbed layer of N_2 sliding on a lead film, abruptly decreases by a factor of ~2 when the lead film is cooled below its ...

The planar cell polarity protein Vangl2 interacts with the PDZ‐domains of Scribble but not with a unique PDZ‐like domain in Inturned

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...

Drag reduction by polymer additives from turbulent spectra [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
We extend the analysis of the friction factor for turbulent pipe flow reported by G. Gioia, P. Chakraborty and N. Goldenfeld (GCG) (G. Gioia and P. Chakraborty, Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 044502 (2006), N. Goldenfeld, Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 044503 (2006)) to the
