Application of Biotechnology to Solve Relevant Biological Problems Promotes Understanding of Underlying Concepts [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
Although some efforts have been made to modify the curriculum of the Introductory Biology laboratories from a passive to a more experimental form, the use of modern biotechnology had not been implemented at our institution.

A long and complex enhancer activates transcription of the gene coding for the highly abundant immediate early mRNA in murine cytomegalovirus [PDF]

open access: yes, 1985
Using the simian virus 40 "enhancer trap" approach, we have identified a transcription enhancer located just upstream of the major immediate early gene of murine cytomegalovirus. This enhancer has several striking properties.

Nucleotide sequence of an immediate-early frog virus 3 gene [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Virology, 1984
We have used "gene walking" with synthetic oligonucleotides and M13 dideoxynucleotide sequencing techniques to obtain the complete coding and flanking sequences of the gene encoding a major immediate-early RNA (molecular weight, 169,000) of frog virus 3.

Infectious Diseases Management in Small‐Scale Freshwater Aquaculture in West Africa: Lessons for Low‐ and Middle‐Income Countries

open access: yesReviews in Aquaculture, Volume 18, Issue 3, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Infectious diseases are an increasing threat to food security, small‐scale livelihoods and the sustainability of aquaculture in low‐ and middle‐income countries (LMICs). In sub‐Saharan Africa, aquaculture is expanding rapidly but production systems often remain fragile.

A Novel Adenovirus in Chinstrap Penguins (Pygoscelis antarctica) in Antarctica

open access: yesViruses, 2014
Adenoviruses (family Adenoviridae) infect various organ systems and cause diseases in a wide range of host species. In this study, we examined multiple tissues from Chinstrap penguins (Pygoscelis antarctica), collected in Antarctica during 2009 and 2010,

Inhibition of Foot-and-Mouth Disease Virus Replicase by Frog Virus 3 Particles

open access: yesJournal of General Virology, 1974
Summary A cell-free system synthesizing FMDV RNA has been shown to be inhibited efficiently by purified FV3 particles. Neither vaccinia nor herpes virus particles produced this effect. The results obtained provide direct evidence that a structural component (or components) or FV3 is responsible for the inhibition.

Frog Virus 3 Morphogenesis: Effect of Temperature and Metabolic Inhibitors

open access: yesJournal of General Virology, 1977
The different stages of frog virus 3 (FV 3) morphogenesis have been investigated in chick embryo fibroblasts infected at an optimal temperature for virus growth (29 degrees C). The metabolic requirements for morphogenesis were determined by adding inhibitors of macromolecular synthesis at different periods in the virus growth cycle. The effect of a non-

Powerful yet challenging: mechanistic niche models for predicting invasive species potential distribution under climate change

open access: yesEcography, Volume 2026, Issue 5, May 2026.
Risk assessments of invasive species present one of the most challenging applications of species distribution models (SDMs) due to the fundamental issues of distributional disequilibrium, niche changes, and truncation. Invasive species often occupy only a fraction of their potential environmental and geographic ranges, as their spatiotemporal dynamics ...

Cricket Paralysis Virus Threatens Cricket Farm Business [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Crickets are a vital source of protein for many human and animals such as frogs, geckos, lizards and are starting to make a debut as an ingredient in dog food. When crickets are consumed it is vital the crickets are free of disease (Dunn).

Telecological Collapse: The Inevitability of Climate Breakdown in the Transmedial Podcast Drama Forest 404

open access: yesFuture Humanities, Volume 4, Issue 1, May 2026.
ABSTRACT This paper presents a close‐hearing analysis of Forest 404, a transmedial audio drama that was released to BBC Sounds in 2019. Despite the drama's eco‐dystopian critique of teleological ‘progress’ narratives (that enable and perpetuate the destruction of the natural world), I argue that the series ultimately propagates a sense of inevitability
