Functional Analysis of Ligand‐Gated Chloride Channels in a Cnidarian Sheds Light on the Evolution of Inhibitory Signaling

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
We uncover a large variety of putative inhibitory ligand‐gated ion channels (LGICs) in the phylum Cnidaria, the sister group to all bilaterian animals. Phylogenetic analysis suggests a complex evolutionary history of inhibitory LGICs with diverse neurotransmitter ligands.

Effects of Captivity and Season on the Gut Microbiota of the Brown Frog (Rana dybowskii)

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2019
The gut microbiota of amphibians is affected by exogenous and endogenous factors. We performed a comprehensive analysis using high-throughput sequencing technology and functional predictions and observed general changes in the gut microbiota of frogs in ...

Polyploidy breaks speciation barriers in Australian burrowing frogs Neobatrachus [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Polyploidy has played an important role in evolution across the tree of life but it is still unclear how polyploid lineages may persist after their initial formation.

Bioinspired Hierarchical Architecture with Water Transport Channels for Strong Adhesion at the Sweating Interface

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
To address adhesion failure in sweaty epidermal electronics, this study proposes a cross‐species, multi‐scale biomimetic interface. By modeling staged wet adhesion, it integrates self‐regulating liquid bridges with directional drainage. This design ensures stable, high‐performance flexible sensing in complex physiological environments, offering a ...

A rapid inventory of amphibians, squamates, and bats of Mata de Plátano Field Station and Nature Reserve, Arecibo, Puerto Rico

open access: yesEcology and Evolution
Puerto Rico harbors a diverse vertebrate fauna with high levels of endemism. However, while several books for vertebrate diversity and local checklists for birds have been published, checklists of amphibians, reptiles, and bats are lacking or nonexistent

Managing Conflicts with Wildlife: Living with Frogs

open access: yesEDIS, 2015
Frogs control garden pests such as insects and slugs, and serve as a food source for many larger wildlife species. Research on the substances frogs secrete through their skins has even led to the creation of new painkillers and antibiotics.

AMPHIBIAN AND REPTILE COLONIZATION OF RECLAIMED COAL SPOIL GRASSLANDS [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
While habitat loss is a major driver of amphibian and reptile declines globally, a subset of post-industrial landscapes, reclaimed and restored, are creating habitat for these animals.
