Minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE) describes patients with chronic liver disease or cirrhosis who have no clinical symptoms of brain dysfunction but perform worse on psychometric tests compared with healthy subjects. The pathogenesis of hepatic encephalopathy is controversial although ammonia has been found to induce cerebral dysfunction.

Menopause is associated with bone loss. Prebiotics increase Ca, inorganic phosphorus (Pi), and Mg absorption, improving bone health. These increases would supply an extra amount of minerals, decreasing bone resorption and possibly reversing ovariectomy-induced bone loss. The present experimental study sought to evaluate the effect of adding a prebiotic

AbstractEffects of storage temperature and duration on 1‐fructo‐exohydrolase (1‐FEH) and 1‐kestose‐hydrolysing (1‐KH) activities and trisaccharide (Tri) and fructo‐oligosaccharide (FOS) status in onion bulbs var Tenshin kept for 24 weeks at 10 and 20 °C were investigated.

[Synthesis of novel fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) by enzymatic reaction].
Comptes rendus des seances de la Societe de biologie et de ses filiales, 1999Fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) are new food ingredients that are able to beneficially affect the host by selectively stimulating the growth and/or activity of colonic bifidobacteria (concept of prebiotics). A commercial enzyme preparation was found to possess a high fructosyltransferase activity and could be used as a biocatalyst for the industrial ...
