Proper Functionalism and the Organizational Theory of Functions

2023
Abstract Proper functionalism explicates epistemic warrant in terms of the function and normal functioning of the belief-forming process. There are two standard substantive views of the sources of functions in the literature in epistemology: God (intelligent design) or Mother Nature (evolution by natural selection).

On the theory of characteristic functions

Russian Mathematical Surveys, 2004
The paper gives a representation theorem (sufficient and necessary conditions) for characteristic functions in probability theory. The theorem is based on the representation theorem for completely monotonic functions.

Hypergeometric functions in the geometric function theory

Applied Mathematics and Computation, 2007
This is a survey paper of the authors work in geometric function theory and the role played by (generalized) hypergeometric functions therein. After 3 pages of introductory notations and definitions, the following is covered: section 2 [1 page]: two theorems on an integral operator and its use in transference of (close to) convexity, section 3 [1/2 ...

Origins of Recursive Function Theory

IEEE Annals of the History of Computing, 1979
For over two millenia mathematicians have used particular examples of algorithms for determining the values of functions. The notion of "?-definability" was the first of what are now accepted as equivalent exact mathematical descriptions of the class of the functions for which algorithms exist.

Density Cumulant Functional Theory

The Journal of Chemical Physics, 2006
Starting point is the energy expectation value as a functional of the one-particle density matrix γ and the two-particle density cumulant λ2. We decompose γ into a best idempotent approximation κ and a correction τ, that is entirely expressible in terms of λ2.
