Fungal community survey of Fraxinus excelior in New Zealand [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The European Ash tree (Fraxinus excelsior) is widely grown throughout Europe. As a large deciduous tree species, it grows a tall, domed crown and has an attractive tree shape, so it is considered as a popular amenity tree species. European Ash is planted

Key thermally dimorphic fungal pathogens: shaping host immunity

open access: yesOpen Biology, 2022
Exposure to fungal pathogens from the environment is inevitable and with the number of at-risk populations increasing, the prevalence of invasive fungal infection is on the rise. An interesting group of fungal organisms known as thermally dimorphic fungi

RNAi in the Rhizarian Phytopathogen Plasmodiophora brassicae: The Causal Agent of Clubroot Disease in Cruciferous Crops

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study uncovers an unusual RNAi pathway in the rhizarian pathogen Plasmodiophora brassicae. In the absence of Dicer, a Drosha‐like RNase III protein supports the biogenesis of predominant 21‐nt small RNAs, and two Argonaute proteins mediate small RNA‐guided silencing.

Crop-destroying fungal and oomycete pathogens challenge food security

open access: yes, 2015
Of the various crop pests and pathogens which blight our harvests, it is the fungi and oomycetes which are the most widely-dispersed groups and which lead the global invasion of agriculture.

Family-Four Aldehyde Dehydrogenases Play an Indispensable Role in the Pathogenesis of Magnaporthe oryzae

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2018
The oxidative degradation of lipids through lipid peroxidation processes results in the generation of free fatty acid radicals. These free radicals including reactive oxygen species (ROS) serve as a substrate for generating reactive aldehydes.

The Epichloë festucae Antifungal Protein Efe-AfpA Has Activity against Numerous Plant Pathogens

open access: yesMicroorganisms, 2023
Fungal plant pathogens can present major problems for most crop species. Currently, control of fungal diseases relies heavily on the use of fungicides. However, there are problems associated with fungicide use, including potential toxicity to non-target ...
