Immobilized furanone derivatives as inhibitors for adhesion of bacteria on modified poly(styrene-co-maleic) anhydride)

open access: yes, 2012
The ability of brominated furanones and other furanone compounds with 2(3H) and 2(5H) cores to inhibit bacterial adhesion of surfaces as well deactivate (destroy) them has been previously reported.

Host‐associated chemical cues mediating host‐finding behaviour in the larval ectoparasitoid Cephalonomia tarsalis

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Host‐associated volatiles mediate host location in Cephalonomia tarsalis, with faecal odours from fourth‐instar larvae, particularly 1‐pentadecene, attracting females and supporting the biological control of stored‐product pest beetles. Abstract BACKGROUND Understanding how parasitoids locate their hosts is essential for improving the effectiveness of ...

Scientific Opinion on Flavouring Group Evaluation 75, Revision 1 (FGE.75Rev1): Consideration of tetrahydrofuran derivatives evaluated by JECFA (63rd meeting) structurally related to tetrahydrofuran derivatives evaluated by EFSA in FGE.33 (2008)

open access: yesEFSA Journal, 2016
The Panel on Food Contact Materials, Enzymes, Flavourings and Processing Aids (CEF) of the EFSA was requested to consider evaluations of flavouring substances assessed since 2000 by the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (the JECFA), and to

Nonthermal plasma approaches for combating implant‐associated infections: A compendious review

open access: yesVIEW, EarlyView.
Implant‐associated infections pose serious clinical challenges. Non‐thermal plasma (NTP) modifications overcome this bottleneck in distinct ways relative to traditional sterilization methods. Gas‐phase plasmas generate highly energetic species, UV radiation and reactive oxygen/nitrogen species (RONS), which alter the implant surface properties.

Solvent-free Synthesis and Antimicrobial Properties of Some Novel Furanone and Spiropyrimidone Derivatives

open access: yes, 2018
Background: The regioselective synthesis of spiro-heterocyclic compounds is intriguing since those compounds have unique non-planar structures and great potential for binding to biomolecules because of their inherent rigid chiral structure.

The marine‐derived furanone reduces intracellular lipid accumulation in vitro by targeting LXRα and PPARα [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, 2020
AbstractRecent studies have demonstrated that commercially available lipid‐lowering drugs cause various side effects; therefore, searching for anti‐hyperlipidaemic compounds with lower toxicity is a research hotspot. This study was designed to investigate whether the marine‐derived compound, 5‐hydroxy‐3‐methoxy‐5‐methyl‐4‐butylfuran‐2(5H)‐one, has an ...

Gas Chromatography‐Based Methods for Profiling Volatile Off‐Aroma Compounds in Grain Legumes: A Review

open access: yesLegume Science, Volume 8, Issue 2, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Instrumental characterisation of the volatile organic compounds (VOCs), responsible for off‐aroma, is mainly centred on gas chromatography‐based techniques. Despite previous reviews that have addressed the chemical compounds and biosynthetic pathways of off‐aroma generation, to date, there is a lack of a comprehensive review that critically ...

Synthesis of Substituted 3‑Hydroxy-2-Furanone Derivatives via an Unusual Enolate Wittig Rearrangement/Alkylative Cyclization Sequence

open access: yes, 2016
Treatment of methyl O-(alkynylmethyl) glycolate derivatives with dialkylboron triflates and Hünig’s base leads to the formation of highly substituted 3-hydroxy-2-furanone derivatives.
