Visual Modelling to Predict Behavioural Responses of Catsharks, Skates, and Plaice to Artificial Light for Use in Bycatch Reduction

open access: yesFisheries Management and Ecology, Volume 33, Issue 3, Page 463-478, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Light can be used to deter bycatch from fishing nets, but few studies have aimed to quantify how species view and respond to light. Here, we used visual models to predict how target (plaice Pleuronectes platessa) and bycatch (small‐spotted catshark Scyliorhinus canicular and undersized skates, Raja spp) species, captured in mixed demersal ...

Ichthysporidium hoferi (Plehn et Mulsow) (Fungi) as parasite in the Baltic cod (Gadus morhua L.) [PDF]

open access: yes, 1974
15.2% of 541 examined cod (Gadus morhua L.) caught in the fjord of Kiel carried a macroscopically visible infection of Ichthyosporidium hoferi (= Ichthyophonus h.). The fungus was found in the liver, heart, spleen, and body-muscles.

Photoperiod modulates male sexual maturation in the Emperor tetra (Nematobrycon palmeri), a strictly tropical ornamental fish

open access: yesJournal of the World Aquaculture Society, Volume 57, Issue 3, June 2026.
Abstract Photoperiod manipulation is widely used to regulate reproduction in temperate fish species, but little is known about its effects in strictly tropical species. This study evaluated whether the Emperor tetra (Nematobrycon palmeri), a tropical ornamental fish, can modulate sexual maturation in response to artificial light regimes.

Coexisting Atlantic Cod Ecotypes in the Barents Sea: An Issue for Managing Fisheries

open access: yesEvolutionary Applications
The largest remaining cod stock in the Atlantic, the Northeast Arctic cod (NEAC), is facing climate change and poor recruitment. It is currently assumed to represent a single biological population.

Induction of putative tetraploid larvae and analysis of unfertilized egg storage for burbot (Lota lota)

open access: yesJournal of the World Aquaculture Society, Volume 57, Issue 3, June 2026.
Abstract Burbot (Lota lota) are a promising candidate for commercial aquaculture production. Methods for captive culture are well understood, the species is highly regarded for its muscle, roe, liver, and skin, and its resistance to many salmonid pathogens coupled with the species' affinity to trout‐like water quality conditions make burbot an ...

Gene-associated markers provide tools for tackling illegal fishing and false eco-certification

open access: yes, 2012
Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated fishing has had a major role in the overexploitation of global fish populations. In response, international regulations have been imposed and many fisheries have been 'eco-certified' by consumer organizations, but ...

Whole‐Genome‐Sequencing Reveals Demographic History and Patterns of Parallel Adaptive Evolution in Indo‐Pacific Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops aduncus) Across Coastal Australian Seascapes

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, Volume 35, Issue 11, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Understanding how demographic dynamics interact with environmental heterogeneity is central to explaining patterns of genomic variation in the marine realm. Indo‐Pacific bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops aduncus) occur along most of the Australian coastline, from tropical to temperate waters, encompassing pronounced differences in temperature ...
