The star formation history of early-type galaxies in the fornax cluster [PDF]

open access: yes, 1998
We have measured central line strengths and line-strength gradients for a complete sample of early-type galaxies in the Fornax cluster, comprising 11 elliptical and 11 lenticular galaxies, more luminous than M(_B) = -17.

Radial Distributions of Star Formation and Gas-phase Metallicity in Spiral–Elliptical Galaxy Pairs

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Using integral-field spectroscopy from the fourth-generation Sloan Digital Sky Survey Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory, we investigate the radial distributions of the star formation rates (SFRs) and gas-phase metallicities in spiral ...

The Progenitor of the Peculiar Galaxy NGC 3077

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2023
We present a study of the structural properties and metallicity distribution of the nearby peculiar galaxy NGC 3077. Using data from our survey of the M81 Group with the Hyper Suprime-Cam on board the Subaru Telescope, we construct deep color–magnitude ...

A Proof‐of‐Concept Assessment of a Novel Wearable Eyelid Muscle Device: A Pre‐Clinical Animal Cadaver Study for Eyelid Closure Restoration

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
This article introduces a soft wearable eyelid sling device incorporating a hydraulic soft artificial muscle (SAM) for achieving complete closure of an eyelid. The SAM is driven by a cam mechanism that provides a displacement profile closely matched with those of a healthy eyelid.

Mapping the dynamics, star-formation rates, and chemical properties of galaxies with integral field spectroscopy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Major advances in the development of instruments for eight and ten meter class telescopes are revolutionising our understanding of galaxy formation. In particular, Integral Field Spectrographs (which produce a three dimensional {x, y, velocity) map of a ...

A Comprehensive Perturbative Formalism for Phase Mixing in Perturbed Disks. II. Phase Spirals in an Inhomogeneous Disk Galaxy with a Nonresponsive Dark Matter Halo

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2023
We develop a linear perturbative formalism to compute the response of an inhomogeneous stellar disk embedded in a nonresponsive dark matter (DM) halo to various perturbations like bars, spiral arms, and encounters with satellite galaxies.

Probing the Physics of Interacting Galaxies

open access: yesAstrophysics and Space Science, 2003
Both Arp 140 and Arp 104 reveal extended tidal tails in the HI. The Halpha and FIR fluxes of Arp 140 yield similar SFR of ~0.8 solar masses per year. In contrast the Halpha flux of Arp 104 yields a SFR of ~0.05 solar masses per year, ~ 20 times smaller than that obtained from the FIR flux.

A Bifunctional T3SS‐Effector Simultaneously Cleaves Host MAP Kinase and Inhibits PPM1A Phosphatase

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Pathogenic bacteria exploit the metalloprotease effector NleD to subvert host defenses. Structural, biochemical, and infection analyses reveal a bifunctional mechanism by which NleD binds and inhibits the host phosphatase PPM1A while preserving its proteolytic activity against MAPKs.

Emergence of the Galaxy Morphology–Star Formation Activity–Clustercentric Radius Relations in Galaxy Clusters

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
We investigate when and how the relations of galaxy morphology and star-forming activity with clustercentric radius become evident in galaxy clusters. We identify 162 galaxy clusters with total mass ${{M}}_{\mathrm{tot}}^{\mathrm{cl}}\gt 5\times {10}^{13}
