Game Balancing in Dominion: An Approach to Identifying Problematic Game Elements [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence, 2022
In the popular card game Dominion, the configuration of game elements greatly affects the experience for players. If one were redesigning Dominion, therefore, it may be useful to identify game elements that reduce the number of viable strategies in any given game configuration - i.e. elements that are unbalanced.

The Element of Surprise in Timed Games

2003
We consider concurrent two-person games played in real time, in which the players decide both which action to play, and when to play it. Such timed games differ from untimed games in two essential ways. First, players can take each other by surprise, because actions are played with delays that cannot be anticipated by the opponent.

Can gamification increases consumers’ engagement in fitness apps? The moderating role of commensurability of the game elements

, 2020
Many app firms have adopted gamification, aiming at making consumers more engaging and loyal. Given the ambivalent evidence on the effectiveness of gamification, this study proposes that the effectiveness of gamification is moderated by the types of game

Elements of Lattice Games

2020
Partial order and lattice formalize the idea of direction of movement. Correspondence and fixed point provide the mathematical underpinning for best choices and equilibrium. A lattice game is a strategic game in which players have lattice action spaces. Foundations of monotone games are set in this framework.

A Taxonomy of Game Balancing Elements

Anais Estendidos do XXII Simpósio Brasileiro de Jogos e Entretenimento Digital (SBGames Estendido 2023), 2023
This study constructs a comprehensive taxonomy of game balancing elements using the Grounded Theory methodology. The taxonomy aims to aid game developers in understanding the factors influencing game balance, thereby informing design decisions. The research contributes to game studies by providing a theoretical foundation for further exploration and ...

Elements of Game Theory

1975
Game theory contains one important application of the theory of linear optimization, including the duality theorems. In recent times, game theory has come to be of great significance with the realization that many economic and behavioral questions may be formulated as game-theoretic problems and that statistical decision theory is closely connected to ...

Instructional and Gaming Elements

2014
Serious game design presents a unique challenge to researchers and developers alike. The most successful games are designed by integrating two disparate bodies of knowledge: training and education, and high-quality game design. Simply pairing instructional elements with traditional game elements, however, is often inadequate.
