The sex ratio of Plasmodium gametocytes

open access: yesParasitology, 1989
SUMMARYSex ratio theory usually predicts an equilibrium sex ratio and equal proportions of males and females in a population, including the progenitors of the reproductive cells of protozoans. This proposal was tested with three species of malarial parasites of lizards, Plasmodium mexicanum of the western fence lizard, and P. agamae and P. giganteum of

DNA synthesis in gametocytes of Plasmodium falciparum

open access: yesParasitology, 1988
SUMMARYThe DNA content of Plasmodium falciparum gametocytes during intra-erythrocytic development and during gametogenesis was established by cytophotometric methods. Intra-erythrocytic micro- and macrogametocytes (Stage I-Stage VB) contain about twice the amount of DNA of haploid sporozoites and ringstages, indicating that DNA is synthesized during ...

A reiterative method for calculating the early bactericidal activity of antituberculosis drugs.

open access: yes, 2002
Studies of early bactericidal activity (EBA) are important in the rapid evaluation of new antituberculosis drugs. Historically, these have concentrated on the log fall in the viable count in sputum during the first 48 hours of therapy.

Comparative 3D ultrastructure of Plasmodium falciparum gametocytes

open access: yesNature Communications
AbstractDespite the enormous significance of malaria parasites for global health, some basic features of their ultrastructure remain obscure. Here, we apply high-resolution volumetric electron microscopy to examine and compare the ultrastructure of the transmissible male and female sexual blood stages of Plasmodium falciparum as well as the more ...

Associations between Season and Gametocyte Dynamics in Chronic Plasmodium falciparum Infections.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2016
IntroductionIn a markedly seasonal malaria setting, the transition from the transmission-free dry season to the transmission season depends on the resurgence of the mosquito population following the start of annual rains.

Do the venous blood samples replicate malaria parasite densities found in capillary blood? A field study performed in naturally-infected asymptomatic children in Cameroon

open access: yesMalaria Journal, 2017
Background The measure of new drug- or vaccine-based approaches for malaria control is based on direct membrane feeding assays (DMFAs) where gametocyte-infected blood samples are offered to mosquitoes through an artificial feeder system.

Plasmodium falciparum gametocytes: their longevity and infectivity

open access: yesParasitology, 1977
The longevity and infectivity of isolated populations of Plasmodium falciparum gametocytes were studied. Following chloroquine treatment gametocyte numbers fell with a constant rate of loss over a period of 16–24days; the populations had a half-life of 2·4 days. The sex ratio stayed constant throughout at 4 female:1 male.

The Gates Malaria Partnership: a consortium approach to malaria research and capacity development.

open access: yes, 2012
Recently, there has been a major increase in financial support for malaria control. Most of these funds have, appropriately, been spent on the tools needed for effective prevention and treatment of malaria such as insecticide-treated bed nets, indoor ...

Gametocytes, sporozoites and liver schizonts.

open access: yesSouth African medical journal = Suid-Afrikaanse tydskrif vir geneeskunde, 1974
Plasmodium falciparum differs from other human species of Plasmodium in the short, limited exo-erythrocytic stage in the life cycle, which is an apparent disadvantage in surviving through a prolonged non-transmission season such as occurs throughout much of tropical Africa.

Genotyping Plasmodium falciparum gametocytes using amplicon deep sequencing

open access: yesMalaria Journal
Background Understanding the dynamics of gametocyte production in polyclonal Plasmodium falciparum infections requires a genotyping method that detects distinct gametocyte clones and estimates their relative frequencies. Here, a marker was identified and
