On the gas expansion and gas hold-up in vertical slugging columns—A simulation study

Chemical Engineering and Processing: Process Intensification, 2008
Abstract A study on the gas phase expansion and gas hold-up occurring in free bubbling vertical slug flow is reported. A slug flow simulator (SFS) supported by air–water experimental data was used for this purpose. The study was accomplished by implementing in the simulator the gas phase expansion along the column.

Influence of the gas density on the gas entrainment rate and gas hold-up in loop-venturi reactors

Chemical Engineering Science, 1992
The hydrodynamics of a loop-venturi reactor were investigated using a downflow liquid jet ejector. Both the gas entrainment rate of the ejector and the gas hold-up in the main holding vessel were shown to be influenced by the gas density. The amount of volumetrically entrained gas as well as the gas hold-up increase, whilst the average gas bubble ...

Local gas hold-up measurement in stirred fermenters. II. Fermenter gas hold-up characterization by a second order empirical model

Biotechnology Techniques, 1990
A second order polynomial, fitted by means of a Box-Hunter design, was used to describe the local gas hold-up of a stirred fermenter as a function of the stirrer speed, the aeration and the height of the point of measurement. Stirrer speed was found to be the main influential variable, whereas the aeration and the height of the point of measurement ...

Gas hold-up profiles in foaming liquids in bubble columns

Chemical Engineering Journal, 2001
Radial variation of gas hold-up was investigated in 0.385 m i.d. bubble column using gamma ray tomography. The gas phase was air and the liquid phase comprised of aqueous solutions of n-butanol at different concentrations (0-0.5% v/v). These solutions exhibit foaming behaviour at higher concentrations.

Dispersed phase hold-up in mechanically agitated gas-liquid contactors

Journal of Chemical Technology & Biotechnology, 1998
In the present study, in mechanically agitated gas–liquid contactors (MAC), a generalized correlation for the direct estimation of dispersed gas phase hold-up is proposed. This present proposed new correlation in terms of fundamental operating variables, involving gas velocity, impeller speed in terms of Froude number, vessel geometry and the physical ...
