Role of Ki-67 as a prognostic factor in gastrointestinal stromal tumors [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
AIM: To investigate primarily the prognostic value of Ki-67, as well as other parameters, in gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs). ----- METHODS: Ki-67, c-KIT, platelet-derived growth factor receptor-alpha (PDGFRα), smooth muscle actin (SMA ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

A Rare Cause of Upper Gastrointestinal Bleeding: Aorta-Esophageal Fistula [PDF]

open access: yes
Aortoesophageal fistula (AEF) is rarely seen in gastroenterology practice. It is a very fatal condition. Common causes of AEF are aortic aneurysms and dissections, foreign body ingestion, traumatic aortic injuries, ruptured penetrating aortic ulcers ...

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor with Synchronous Gallbladder Adenocarcinoma [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
5 p.Sporadic but continuous single reports of simultaneous or synchronous gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) and epithelial carcinomas have been published in the literature, to the point where the question is raised as to whether there is a simple ...

The human gut microbiome across the life course

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Despite significant individual variation and continuous change throughout life, the human gut microbiome follows some life stage‐specific trends. This article provides a brief overview of how gut microbiome composition shifts across different phases of life. Created in BioRender. Özkurt, E. (2026) https://BioRender.com/8q4nrnc.

Role of fecal calprotectin in gastrointestinal disorders. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
BACKGROUND: Fecal calprotectin (FC) has been proposed as a useful and non-invasive marker of acute intestinal inflammation. AIM: We summarize recent evidences on FC, providing practical perspectives on its diagnostic and prognostic role in ...

Microbiome−host proteostasis crosstalk—An emerging perspective on mechanisms and interventions toward healthy longevity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Proteostasis and the gut microbiota play a key role in shaping host physiology. Microbiota‐derived metabolites, vitamins, and RNA modulate host proteostasis. Findings from model systems, including C. elegans, indicate microbes can either stabilize or disrupt host proteostasis.
