Gene Families and Evolution [PDF]
Gene families refer to two or more genes that come from a common ancestral gene in which the individual members of the gene family may or may not have a similar function. The idea of gene families implicitly invokes a process in which an original gene exists, is duplicated and the resulting gene products evolve.

β1,3-glycosyltransferase Gene Family and IGnT Gene Family
2009This section mainly reviews β1,3-glycosyltransferases (β3GT), which transfer donor substrate sugars via a β1,3-linkage, and IGnTs, which transfer donor substrate sugars via a β1,6-linkage (Hennet 2002; Narimatsu 2004; Togayachi 2006). Information such as accession numbers of these β3GTs and IGnTs are shown in Table 1.

Evolution of the spermadhesin gene family
Gene, 2005Spermadhesins belong to a novel family of secretory proteins of the male genital tract. They are major proteins of the seminal plasma and have been found peripherally associated to the sperm surface. So far, they have only been detected in ungulates, specifically in pig, cattle, and horse, respectively.

Evolution and function of the ADP ribosyl cyclase/CD38 gene family in physiology and pathology.
Physiological Reviews, 2008The membrane proteins CD38 and CD157 belong to an evolutionarily conserved family of enzymes that play crucial roles in human physiology. Expressed in distinct patterns in most tissues, CD38 (and CD157) cleaves NAD(+) and NADP(+), generating cyclic ADP ...

The NOX family of ROS-generating NADPH oxidases: physiology and pathophysiology.
Physiological Reviews, 2007For a long time, superoxide generation by an NADPH oxidase was considered as an oddity only found in professional phagocytes. Over the last years, six homologs of the cytochrome subunit of the phagocyte NADPH oxidase were found: NOX1, NOX3, NOX4, NOX5 ...

Ras-like genes and gene families in the mouse
Mammalian Genome, 1991Four human RAS-like cDNAs and a mouse genomic DNA fragment were used to define novel mouse Ras-like genes and gene families. Inheritance of DNA restriction fragment length variants associated with these genes in recombinant inbred and backcross mice allowed definition of 12 genetic loci, nine of which were mapped, to chromosomes (Chr) 2, 4, 7, 8, 9 ...
