The ‘Real-World Approach’ and Its Problems: A Critique of the Term Ecological Validity

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychology, 2020
A popular goal in psychological science is to understand human cognition and behavior in the ‘real-world.’ In contrast, researchers have typically conducted their research in experimental research settings, a.k.a. the ‘psychologist’s laboratory.’ Critics

Infection Control Practices for Vascular Access Management in Hemodialysis: Results From a Nationwide Survey of Japanese National University Hospitals

open access: yesTherapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Introduction Bloodstream infections due to repeated vascular access (VA) puncture and circuit connections remain major concerns in hemodialysis. Therefore, we examined current practices for glove, disinfectant, and personal protective equipment (PPE) use according to VA type in national university hospitals in Japan.

Uncovering Multi-Site Identifiability Based on Resting-State Functional Connectomes

open access: yes, 2019
Multi-site studies are becoming important to increase statistical power, enhance generalizability, and to improve the likelihood of pooling relevant subgroups together activities.

Reciprocal control of viral infection and phosphoinositide dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Phosphoinositides, although scarce, regulate key cellular processes, including membrane dynamics and signaling. Viruses exploit these lipids to support their entry, replication, assembly, and egress. The central role of phosphoinositides in infection highlights phosphoinositide metabolism as a promising antiviral target.

Improving the Generalizability and Robustness of Large-Scale Traffic Signal Control

open access: yesIEEE Open Journal of Intelligent Transportation Systems
A number of deep reinforcement-learning (RL) approaches propose to control traffic signals. Compared to traditional approaches, RL approaches can learn from higher-dimensionality input road and vehicle sensors and better adapt to varying traffic ...

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Estimating the reliability of composite scores [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
In situations where multiple tests are administered (such as the GCSE subjects), scores from individual tests are frequently combined to produce a composite score.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Review: Michael Huberman & Matthew B. Miles (Eds.) (2002). The Qualitative Researcher's Companion

open access: yesForum: Qualitative Social Research, 2002
A companion is traditionally a secondary piece of work that accompanies the main texts of a discipline. Qualitative research now has such a foundation of work that we can begin to see the production of secondary literature. This book contains a selection
