Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

Reaction of common bean genotypes to the reproduction of Meloidogyne javanica and Meloidogyne incognita

open access: yesPesquisa Agropecuária Tropical, 2019
The production of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) may be compromised by a variety of pests and diseases, with root-knot nematodes standing out among the soil-borne pathogens that cause significant losses.

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

The effect of environmental heterogeneity on RPW8-mediated resistance to powdery mildews in Arabidopsis thaliana [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Background and Aims: The biotic and abiotic environment of interacting hosts and parasites may vary considerably over small spatial and temporal scales. It is essential to understand how different environments affect host disease resistance because this ...

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Cereal Root Interactions with Soilborne Pathogens—From Trait to Gene and Back

open access: yesAgronomy, 2019
Realizing the yield potential of crop plants in the presence of shifting pathogen populations, soil quality, rainfall, and other agro-environmental variables remains a challenge for growers and breeders worldwide.

Collective action framing genetic engineering resistance in New Zealand [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The genetic engineering resistance movement in New Zealand constructed strategic and meaningful interpretations of why the genetic engineering technique is problematic and what can be done about it.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Beyond immune escape:a variant surface glycoprotein causes suramin resistance in Trypanosoma brucei [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Suramin is one of the first drugs developed in a medicinal chemistry program (Bayer, 1916), and it is still the treatment of choice for the hemolymphatic stage of African sleeping sickness caused by Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense.

Clopidogrel resistance and genetic factors

open access: yesTurk Kardiyoloji Dernegi Arsivi-Archives of the Turkish Society of Cardiology, 2013
Dual antiplatelet therapy combining aspirin and clopidogrel is the standart care for patients WHO ave ACS or undergoing PCI according to guidelines.Itss well established that the antiplatelet response to clopidogrel varies widely among patients.Patients displaying little attenuation of platelet reactivity under therapy are recognized as clopidogrel ...
