Variations of Genetic Algorithms [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2019
The goal of this project is to develop the Genetic Algorithms (GA) for solving the Schaffer F6 function in fewer than 4000 function evaluations on a total of 30 runs. Four types of Genetic Algorithms (GA) are presented - Generational GA (GGA), Steady-State (mu+1)-GA (SSGA), Steady-Generational (mu,mu)-GA (SGGA), and (mu+mu)-GA.

Open Problems in Human Trait Genetics [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2021
Genetic studies of human traits have revolutionized our understanding of the variation between individuals, and opened the door for numerous breakthroughs in biology, medicine and other scientific fields. And yet, the ultimate promise of this area of research is still not fully realized. In this review, we highlight the major open problems that need to

The effect of genomic information on optimal contribution selection in livestock breeding programs [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
BACKGROUND: Long-term benefits in animal breeding programs require that increases in genetic merit be balanced with the need to maintain diversity (lost due to inbreeding). This can be achieved by using optimal contribution selection. The availability of

Unraveling Mycobacterium tuberculosis acid resistance and pH homeostasis mechanisms

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Mycobacterium tuberculosis exhibits a remarkable resilience to acid stress. In this Review, we discuss some of the molecular mechanisms and metabolic pathways used by the tubercle bacilli to adapt and resist host‐mediated acid stress. Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) is a successful pathogen that has developed a variety of strategies to survive and ...

Genetic algorithms for the numerical solution of variational problems without analytic trial functions [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2005
A coding of functions that allows a genetic algorithm to minimize functionals without analytic trial functions is presented and implemented for solving numerically some instances of variational problems from physics.

The solution supramolecular structure of α2 → 8 polysialic acid suggests a structural cause for its low immunogenicity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
α2 → 8 polysialic acid elicits poor immunogenicity. Small‐angle scattering shows a supramolecular structure with parallel‐chain binding, although in different forms at μm and mm calcium. The major histocompatibility complex requires molecular weights around 2000 Da to produce antibodies, and 2000 Da polysialic oligomers will bind in these structures ...

A Spectral Graph Approach to Discovering Genetic Ancestry [PDF]

open access: yesAnnals of Applied Statistics, 4(1), 179-201, 2010, 2009
Mapping human genetic variation is fundamentally interesting in fields such as anthropology and forensic inference. At the same time patterns of genetic diversity confound efforts to determine the genetic basis of complex disease. Due to technological advances it is now possible to measure hundreds of thousands of genetic variants per individual across

A genome-wide association study identifies protein quantitative trait loci (pQTLs) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
There is considerable evidence that human genetic variation influences gene expression. Genome-wide studies have revealed that mRNA levels are associated with genetic variation in or close to the gene coding for those mRNA transcripts - cis effects, and ...

Refining the NaV1.7 pharmacophore of a class of venom‐derived peptide inhibitors via a combination of in silico screening and rational engineering

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Venom peptides have shown promise in treating pain. Our study uses computer screening to identify a peptide that targets a sodium channel (NaV1.7) linked to chronic pain. We produced the peptide in the laboratory and refined its design, advancing the search for innovative pain therapies.

Genetic–environment associations explain genetic differentiation and variation between western and eastern North Pacific rhinoceros auklet (Cerorhinca monocerata) breeding colonies

open access: yesEcology and Evolution
Animals are strongly connected to the environments they live in and may become adapted to local environments. Examining genetic–environment associations of key indicator species, like seabirds, provides greater insights into the forces that drive ...
