Completion of the genomic sequencing of rice has enhanced the discovery of new genes. Wild rice relatives are good sources for extending the genetic variation of cultivated rice. Reproductive barriers are commonly found in distant crosses of rice and are attracting attention.

Life span is subject to genetic modification in yeasts, nematodes, fruit flies, mice, humans, and other vertebrates and invertebrates. There are a few single-gene mutants known that extend life span in yeast and nematodes; in other experimental systems the character is treated quantitatively, and generally has a low to moderate heritability.

Abstract The causes of heritable variation in man are mutation and recombination. Further diversity is made possible by the diploid state in which metabolism is influenced by the simultaneous action of homologous genes. Consideration of the events stemming from the action of a single intranuclear gene reveals that the genetic impulse, mediated by a ...

Genetic variation in prehistoric Sardinia
Human Genetics, 2007We sampled teeth from 53 ancient Sardinian (Nuragic) individuals who lived in the Late Bronze Age and Iron Age, between 3,430 and 2,700 years ago. After eliminating the samples that, in preliminary biochemical tests, did not show a high probability to yield reproducible results, we obtained 23 sequences of the mitochondrial DNA control region, which ...

Genetic Variations and Association
2010Publisher Summary This chapter provides information about the human hydroxytryptamine (HT)R6 gene structure, its evolution, and its expression profile in both the brain and in peripheral tissues. The chapter describes the regulatory regions like binding sites for transcription factors (TFs) or for miRNA.
